I pulled out my old prima stategy guide that I purchased alongside WoW back in the day. I looked at the glossery of abbreviations because I wanted to prove that people who are attacking others using VC as an abbreviation for Deadmines claiming it was never a thing, are just wrong.
Mentioned in the abbreviations section is VC, refering to Van Cleef, the final boss of the Deadmines dungeon. This is to indicate that people wish to create a group for Deadmines. I also double checked to make sure that DM is mentioned, but it doesn’t show up on the list.
In summary, both VC and DM are perfectly acceptable. According to the official guide, written even before any of us touched the game, VC is actually the standard. Now we all know better, thanks.

People who say it was never a thing are dumb. However, it was a server specific thing. On my server it was DM. On yours it may have been VC.

Exactly what I’ve been arguing when others are ripping people apart in chat.
DM stopped being used when Dire Maul came out. They just switched to VC, Van Cleef.

That was my argument, until I checked to see, and even before the game was released, it was still refered to as VC. The usage of VC predates Dire Maul, even.
Deviate Delight uses DM and VC. I’ve seen people complain over using either or however. Does it really matter? You use DM for Dead Mines or Van Cleef for the same dungeon. More casual people are going to know DM as Dead Mines. The more experienced and older players use VC. If people don’t understand what you are asking for when it comes to group finding for Dead Mines they aren’t going to join either way.
That’s right, it doesn’t matter. I can’t tell you how much people get attacked in chat for using VC, though. I think it’s important we establish that both are completely reasonable.
As long as it is clear to the reader what is being advertised for it shouldn’t matter.
It was VC when I started
It was DM when I started Classic
I still knew it was Dead Mines, others knew it was Dead Mines.

This is the way.
For real though, I distinctly remember folks arguing in chat about how saying DM was stupid since DM = Dire Maul. You’d have someone rarely say “LFM DM” and then a bunch of people come out correcting them, then an argument would follow about how “no one does Dire Maul anymore” or “no one would be looking for Dire Maul groups in Westfall, idiot.”
Man, I just yearn for the mines.
Why do we have a thread about /1 chat? Nobody cares.
Nah man, its dmw, simple as dm=deadmines, and w=westfall.
Not on my server. Dire Maul is DME, DMW, DMN, DMT. Who asks for Dire Maul without specifying which wing?

Dire Maul = DMN, DME, DMW, DMT.
How does the book saying VC = Van Cleef, an important lore character in classic, mean that VC = Deadmines?
Does it say VC is a common abbreviation for Deadmines or for Van Cleef?
When I was a kid it was VC.
But it used to be DM until Dire Maul came out, then changed to VC to avoid confusion.
Maybe that was server-specific as well. I only remember general DM spam.
It was never. Dire Maul wasnt out and we called Deadmines DM. Get over it.

Why would you force everyone to ask you which wing? Even in classic people specify which wing.
