My PC tower makes a weird humming sound when I open Collection Appearances?!

It also happen when I open the azerite trait menu. Does this happen to anyone else? It makes me think my PC is gonna explode! Why?!?!

Sounds like a memory issue, are you sure it only happens when you open the collection menu? does it happen to anything else beside wow??

As far as I’ve noticed it’s only during these instances, and it stops as soon as I close the menu.

What kind of a humming sound is it? Like a fan, more low-pitched, more high-pitched?

Could be the CPU fan responding to a change in processor load, though in that case I’d expect to hear it more when you’re in populated areas.

Could be the hard drive either reading files, or being used for additional memory. HDDs tend to have a lower, “bigger” kind of sound than fans, SSDs are more of a whine. They’ll tend to be more erratic-sounding whereas fans are more stable.

Appearances is a low pitched buzzing sound, like a constant cricket noise, and azerite traits are a little higher pitched, but same frequency.

Sounds like it might be a memory thing, then. If you run WoW with any programs in the background or a lot of addons you might try closing/disabling them and seeing if that changes anything. However, on its own this isn’t anything to be worried about. You’re probably well short of running into any problems, and the hardware is probably fine.

You might want to post on Tech Support if you’re unsure, though. Don’t take my word for it, I’m just some random on the internet. :stuck_out_tongue:

Your computer might be kicking the fans on if it’s heating up.

Your computer needs help yo.

I have noticed that my fps plummets when I open both the collections tab and the Azerite armor talent screen. I just assumed that they are a bit more memory intensive than the rest of the game.

Fans speeding up when the CPU is under heavier load is perfectly normal and to be expected. You should only worry if a) your fans are routinely spending a lot of time at maximum speed, b) your fans don’t spin up when your CPU temp goes up, or c) the temperature remains high despite them. Otherwise, the fans are just doing their job.

Do you have vsync on? If not, try enabling and see if it still happens.

I would assume the collection tab renders in multiple passes, so it could just be the card working overtime for no reason.

I had a card once which would whistle when playing old games that shot up to 1000fps or whatever.

I think it’s getting excited to try on some new outfits!

Odd. I have a ~5 year old CPU and it doesn’t do that.

N’Zoth is trying to commune with you through your CPU fan.

Give in to the whispers.

I enabled vsync, but the sound is still there

HDD might be dying.
WoW and battle.net are very good at screwing the hard disk.

This. If you are hearing odd noise form your computer, your HDD is probably dying. Mine died last year. It made more and more noise until it stopped working.

The sound can be caused by at least 20 things. Chances are the humming is electrical in nature. Something probably isn’t shielded properly.

It’s azerite blocking the fans. Same thing happened to me recently. Darn stuff just collects EVERYWHERE…
