My PC is Due For a Rebuild

So going to post what I have first and other than the graphics card the rest is soon to be 3 years old.

MSI MAG 550 Tomahawk Gaming Motherboard
AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 6-Core Processor 3.70 GHz
32Gigs of DDR4 3200mhz
M.2 for system and Windows 11
Solid state HD for WoW and other games
750-WATT Power Supply
Currently keeping my AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT for new build.

Going to:
MSI - PRO B650-P WIFI (Socket AM5) Motherboard
Ryzen 7 7700X 8-core - 16-Thread 4.5GHz (5.4 GHz Max Boost)
32 Gigs DDR5 7200mhz
New M.2 for operating system.
Older M.2 reformatted for WoW and other games
Two 2 TB SSD’s for everything else
New 850-watt Power Supply

Being that WoW is the main game I play on PC I am hoping this jump in CPU and memory will improve game performance for me. I recently went from playing at 1080p to 1440p on an ultra-wide. Performance took a big hit, and I hope this fixes that.

Unless you’re dying for a full upgrade.

Recommend you follow this path instead.

5600x → 5700x3d or 5800x3d.
GPU upgrade. New GPUs are around the corner so if you can wait, wait.

WoW benefits greatly from the extra cache. Your GPU is also on the weaker side especially if you’re trying to push 3440x1440p

If those 2 upgrades above doesn’t quite do it for you, then you can go up to the 9800x3d.

My idiotself went from a 5800x3d to 7800x3d and now 9800x3d. The 9800x3d isn’t drastically better than the 5800x3d, still its able to sustain higher fps if you’re trying to milk every point.

I myself play on 3800x1600p and 3440x1440p. The 5700xt will be pushing its limit nowadays.

I am doing the full new build. I will get a new graphics card after the new cards early next year roll out to see what happens to the prices.

Otherwise FEDEX and UPS dropped of my MB, M.2 SSD 990 2 TB, CPU, Cooler, and Memory a few hours ago. I will be having the new 850watt power supply delivered on Saturday. Seems like a good time to do a rebuild during a break from raiding over the holidays. Am I right?

You will definitely have a performance boost with the new build, assuming you’re doing a fresh install of windows and getting rid of all the bloat and potential bugs over the years along with the faster speeds of the AM5 platform.

I was thinking about a new case, but I couldn’t find any I liked. So going to stick with my current Rosewill Rise full ATX tower. Still feel the need to keep a disk drive. Burned a ton of stuff over the years.

Oh, and yes, a fresh install of Windows 11 on the new SSD 990 PRO.

What wow really likes is fast access to game data, which is why x3d is so good.

Your 7700x might have stability problems running the ram at the full 7200MT/s, but your performance in wow will depend more heavily on the memory latency than the memory bandwidth.

Will probably put WoW on the 990 Pro as well and nothing else for now. Not sure I can offer it faster access than that.

I was talking about your ram, not the SSD (which is what the 990 is).

Getting 7200Mt/s stable on Zen 4 (Ryzen 7000) can be very challenging depending on your specific CPU bin.

Reading this specifically, resolution changes tanking performance are usually an indication that the limiting factor is the GPU, as CPU load doesn’t usually scale with resolution (There are exceptions to this, main one I’ve encountered is raytraced hogwarts legacy).

OP already went ahead and purchased what they posted. That’s why I backed off. Only thing to suggest now is wait and see what nvidia will offer and how market will be affected if at all due to other forces like tariffs

Just trying to prepare him for if he doesn’t get the expected FPS increase, or the system keeps crashing due to ram instability with xmp on.

Not sure why I would have DDR5 instability with ram that is supposed to operate at 7200mhz but I understand and welcome the concerns. As far as my GPU, as I said I am waiting to see the new releases and what happens to the pricing in the new year.

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting a drastic system improvement. For me it is about age and my system is about 3yrs old. So just time for an update. Might even super clean all the old stuff and put together a computer to donate to a family who doesn’t have one with my older parts.

Oh, and if nothing really grabs me. Will probably just go from the RX 5700XT to a RX 7800XT. This computer is really just used for online and WoW anyway. I have my PS5 for my other gaming needs.

I just want to fill this in because I constantly see X3D with extra cache being the cat’s meow and it is to a degree but people need to understand how the client engine work. If the client is heavily nested & looped while dumping a ton of rendering on one or two cores (most games but especially online) than latency is obviously a major impact. One way to get better latency is AMD’s X3D and another is faster instructions per cycle (fantastic if you have both like the 78003DX, 98003DX, etc.,). So take a game like SW Jedi Survivor and look at HB/Techspot data you see the 58003DX does excellent (almost 14700k/14900k performance) even with DDR4 ram. Yet the 9700x and even 9600X offer similar results thanks to their faster DDR5 RAM and IPC.

I am eager to see how noticeable if at all the jump from DDR4 3200 to DDR5 7200 is. Internet says it is about a 114% increase, I think.

it’s not apples to apples as you also upgraded your CPU and I’m not sure of the ram timing in your previous or new system. You are also GPU limited with the 5700 XT so the floor of your FPS (lows) will certainly be better you may not see a large increase in avg FPS @ 1440p with the 5700XT unless you lower the performance settings from top levels.

That said techspot ran a text on intel CPUs and saw 16% increase in the 14600k & 14900k going from DDR4 3600 to DDR5 7200 in their test suite. They saw a 20% increase in the 12900k going from DDR4 3600 to DDR5 6400.

TPU ran a DDR5 frequency test using DDR5 4800 to 8000 (and in-between) using the 9950x. Basically saw most apps/games top off using 6000, with about 8% increase in apps going from 4800 to 6000 or faster. Gaming @ 1440p was around 6% increase in games going from 4800 to anything 6000 or faster (720p gaming was around 10% increase)

Once again not apples to apples in your situation just things to look at.

The concern is that the IMC of the 7700x might not be up to the task of running 7200.

I am considering going to the store I purchased the 7200 from and swapping it for the same brand at 6000 since I know that is the sweet spot, but the board can handle 7200 so maybe I need to rethink the CPU. Honestly, I was more attracted to the 4.5 Ghz base speed.

The Zen 5 (Ryzen 9000) IMC’s main area of improvement was with compatibility and stability at higher speeds.

So go for the AMD - Ryzen 9 7900X 12-core - 24-Thread 4.7 GHz (5.6 GHz Max is what I am hearing.

Would be the 9700x (or 9800x3d if you want the better gaming part)

Ya I was just going to post the AMD Ryzen™ 9 9900X but I will look at those other two as well.

In the end it will just be faster for me to swap the DDR5 7200 for DDR5 6000. Can have it tomorrow. Everything else is a few days out. Then I will see what is up with graphics cards in Feb. Leaning towards something like the RX 7800XT and that price range currently. So, see what is in that area in a few month’s time.

So, my rebuild is done and I really got the results I was hoping for. Fast boot time and my system is just running much better as a whole. This is after multiple updates including bios for motherboard. My monitors refresh rate is 144hz and I can actually reach that level of FPS. Before this upgrade I had trouble managing to maintain over 70 FPS under most situations.
