So like many I am waiting to see what Blizz does for Death Knight for changes cause, like many of you, could use some tune ups. I’m not the greatest at this but here’s my general ideas. I’m not really touching Blood or unholy outside the class tree since I play frost and not super intune with what Unholy and Blood are saying.
Change Cleaving Strikes and remove Unholy Ground. The need to stay in Death and Decay, while not a hard button to press, is annoying and, especially as a frost DK who wouldn’t use it otherwise, it feels unnatural. Doesn’t help when a boss wants you to move a lot either.
Find a way to make Breath of Sindragosa less punishing. Now, I’m going to admit it is a LOT less punishing than it was back in BfA. Rune of Hysteria and Runic Command help a LOT on that front and I can keep it up a lot longer now than I could before, but it still is a frustrating talent build at times, especially if like me the flavor of DW is really appealing. I don’t know if I’d get rid of it entirely, but maybe changing how it works or reducing the cost a bit so if a boss decides you are randomly selected to move away for a mechanic you can cheese it a bit more.
This one’s just me being silly but… Can we have like a Half Titan’s grip? You know, 2h in one had, 1h in the off hand? Add a bit of unique flavor, make it so all builds can use the legendary (Since BoS doesn’t like 2hs atm), maybe let DW take advantage of Might as well? It’s kinda dumb but feel like it’d be fun.
Just in general I feel like some of the upper talent points should just be baked in. Freeing up 3 or 4 points could give a bit more variance. But that’s just a minor thought since over all not the worst right now.
Make Frostscythe a direct upgrade for Obliterate. it’s just dumb button bloat at times.
Lower the points required for Icy Talons, Rune Mastery, and Unholy Bond. Feels like a waste of extra points there.
I don’t know how good all these are but those are my thoughts. Whatever they do I’m sure will feel better, I know they made a lot of Mages happy removing Rune of Power so hopefully at least the Death and Decay issues will be solved.
It’s less punishing in PvE than Obliteration. Hysteria makes it more punishing and should be removed.
Half titan grip is a little weird and Fury will definitely get mad at it, but Might shouldn’t exist as it currently does: it should purely normalize 2h so it’d be functionally the same as DW.
You definitely have some good ideas, and the DK trees are definitely bloated with power crept talents (2% leech? Ridiculous).
I’d argue hysteria has made BoS actually manageable since more rp means more time up. It’s much less of a pain than BfA as I said. And mind you this is from a pve aspect. I’m not a PvPer really.
If fury gets mad over half might idea that’s their issue not mine honestly. Idea I had for a long time to make our DW bit more unique. But those are my thoughts and arguments, sure someone with more of an eye for how the power works would have better.
Only way I see this happening is if they make the spell baseline and have talents in the tree to modify aspects of it. I would like a talent to pocket breath or something of the sort. Just a thought.
Would be cool if as dks we created a frost off-hand via talent that worked for dual-wielding. You would wield a real weapon on your main hand and a frost weapon created from ice on your off hand. Tune the numbers accordingly, idk.
I would argue that frost strike does not hit hard and would be nice to have it replaced with frostscythe.
BoS as baseline would be tough given how intense it is as a talent and doesn’t really synch up well with oblit from what I’ve heard. I say it would need drastic retuning to make it work as a baseline spell.
Frost Strike was always mostly filler but having Frostscythe update it instead of oblit would still work honestly. Even if it just makes frost strike cleave in a wide arc.
I’m throwing in my dumb idea. I always thought the wounds mechanic would have been better served on frost. Frost strike makes targets brittle, remorseless winter aoe spreads a brittle debuff, frostwyrm aoe full stack brittle.
Then obliterate and frostscythe to shatter them. Done in a way that promoted a flatter damage profile to differentiate itself from unholy. I know it will never happen as thats unholy’s deal but it was always a shower thought of mine.
More talent points doesnt give more variance, or choice, It just gives you more talents, also worth mentioning that the issue isnt our talent points, but the talents themselves being trash
Eh, Nah frostscythe has only ever been cool in idea, But its been a lame ability since its first introduction, and when it was good you were just spamming it like obliterate
Button needs an entire redesign if its gonna stay and personally i would rather see it not be an AoE button and rather see it as frosts execute

X button doesnt hit hard, so replace it with X button that also hardly hits hard
When you could just, idk, Buff froststrike so it doesnt feel pathetic to press its not rocket science, well maybe it is for the current developers

Also, nah, unpopular opinion that needs to be said but no necrotic strike did not feel good, and was never fun or engaging. Not at least post legion post rune rework anyways
Yeah. I was responding to the “garbage” comment. Felt great to me but I know there are a lot of people who disliked it. I felt it was fun and engaging in aoe.
the biggest problem with wounds is target swapping, festering strike should honestly only cost 1 rune lol, maybe scourge strike should be the button that costs 2, buff the damage a bit. But the idea of combo points just doesnt suit dk imo, would sooner see a more mop/wod unholy dk playstyle than current
I’d argue it doesn’t overlap that much. I mean, SMF doesn’t overlap with our DW. The playstyle is more important than the weapons in the long run. We’re not running on Fury and they’re not using runes after all.
Single minded fury doesnt overlap because theres no flavor to overlap into, several dual wielding one hand specs already exist
The same cannot be said about dual wielding 2handers which is fury exclusive, any change made to the game to bring a spec closer to copying that would be the sole spec stealing their class flavor

I do miss chonk scourge strikes and i enjoyed the set up attacks (icy touch,plague strike) costing one rune and power attack costing two. I feel like they changed scourge because unholy was the faster spec with the 1 sec global from presence but that’s just me.
I know they switched to having outbreak to help get dmg going fast especially for pvp and we just got rid of touch and plague. Festering strike has felt weird ever since beginning to me since it extended the diseases and coi, like it’s never been a button I’m happy to hit.
Like having dispel on touch or desecrate on plague you did have additional reasons to hit those buttons but other than adding fun combo point wounds fester does nothing really
