My game freezes constantly for 30+ seconds

I’m playing TBC Classic on an AMD R9 290 Video card updated with the most recent drivers on a fresh install of the game. At least 10-20 times every single session I play the game, the game will suddenly stop responding, both of my monitors will show a weird screen tearing effect briefly, and then about 30 seconds later the game starts responding again, usually with AMD application asking me to report a graphics card issue.

Addons seem to make no difference on vs off, I have never encountered this in another game (I can’t confirm that it would never happen, but have played hours of other games and spent lots of time browsing with it never once happening,) and I cannot force it to happen using Furmark.

The game never actually crashes completely when this happens, it just stops responding for a long time and then eventually starts to respond again with visual bugs like portraits not showing up on xperl frames anymore, or sometimes the mouse disappearing.

It seems almost like something that would be caused by a dying video card, but it seems bizarre that it would never happen in other games or furmark if that is indeed what was causing the problem.

Any ideas?

  • Graphics card driver crash (wipe them/reinstall).
  • Overheating (explains tearing appearance).
  • Hardware failure (PSU or GPU).

I know it’s not overheating because my GPU is only around 60 C during gameplay. I just wiped and freshly reinstalled video drivers, hopefully that does something.
