My experience unlocking the allied races

I’ve unlocked all allied races expect for the nightborne. And while these unlocks were fun at first, they became tedious, painstaking, frustrating, and annoying.

The design of these achievements and questlines were clearly such that you could do them while progressing during BfA content (with the expectation of LF Draenei, Void elves, highmountain tauren, and the nightborne - but most of these would have been quick for people who already fully went through Legion).

I had played for a small time during Legion, but am now just getting back into the game. Thanks to that time, I had everything I needed for LF, tauren, and void. Those took about 1-2 hours each.

I started vulpera for the BfA alliaded race unlocks and got them relativity quickly, same with the Mag’har orcs. Went and did some of the DF content and realized that it wouldn’t take me too long to get the zandalari, so I grabbed those eventually.

At first it was rather enjoyable to level toons in the old content, it soon developed into scouring community discords, google, and addons for help once I started going to the alliance allied races.

I had a max level horde that did basically everything to unlock mechagnomes. Just had to get to Mechagon. Once I confirmed by a clarification post on Jan 2020 from a Blizzard Community manager that this could be done on Horde then you’d get a breadcrumb quest for an alliance alt, I went to do everything on my horde main. Then when I went to find the breadcrumb quest expected for my alliance alt at the stormwind embassy and it wasn’t there. It was not till I was talking with a discord community that I learned this apparently ‘broke’ or no longer works after 10.0.5 DF. Their suggestion was to redo everything on an alliance alt - which worked.

And I think this highlights the annoyance I’ve faced with these unlocks (especially for Kul Tirans, Mechagnomes, and Nightborne) - there have been changes and the requirements have been lessened to an extent, but with so many outdated guides and old clarifications its frustrating when they turn out to be wrong (especially when their official clarifications from Blizzards).

The main advice I’ve gotten from everyone to unlock the nightborne is, “if you get stuck just do every quest you see in suramar” which does not sound like a fun experience. And while the exalted rep for the nightborne is no longer required, you still indirectly need rep for “Uniting the Isles” which unlocks suramar world quests - which are required for you to complete parts of Insurrection (which again highlights the annoyance of all these older guides saying “you don’t have to grind any rep at all”).

The sure fire way I found to unlock a race when I got stuck was to just create a new toon (for the faction of the allied race I wanted to unlock) and start the chromie time fresh for the xpac. I’ve spent about equal time in BfA content (if not more than) DF content - which isn’t the greatest feeling for a returning player.

In total I’ve spent well over 60 hours unlocking them, and still have one left to go. Which will be on hold for a bit while I focus on DF content. Why is there still a ridiculous grind to unlock the allied races after 5 years? Has anyone else ran into these frustrations?

Allied races not only should not be locked now, they shouldn’t have been locked before either.

It’s absolutely miserable having to go back and grind this garbage expansion for hours and hours. Literally hundreds of quests to unlock something that shouldn’t have been locked in the first place.

I’d agree they should just make them at least a baseline quest to introduce them and acquire them.

Hmm. Could’ve made it easier to access some zones though i’m not offended if they were released as base races-- likely would have to neuter the racials.

I’ve enjoyed the recruitment quests. They serve as a great way to learn about the lore of the races. But especially with the Kul Tirans - I was so fed up with questing that I just clicked as fast as I can to run to the next quest giver (which was painful without flying). Didn’t care about lore at that point, just wanted to be a chad of a druid.

The worst feeling in the game is playing a character you don’t even really want to play just to unlock the race you want to play.

It’s just so gross feeling.

Exactly - I made a blood elf priest to unlock vulpera - now that toon is legit just for making bags. Though the one benefit is that I found out I don’t actually like priests - maybe that’s why I left in Legion! >.<

If you do everything on one faction you should get the breadcrumbs on the other faction instead of doing it all over based on equivalent activity.

And many expansions later, they should all be unlocked for everyone. Who is doing BfA these days?

I say this as someone who did all the allied races back in the day. Would have zero issue just letting people play them at this point, where would the harm be?

If they unlocked them all tomorrow with no requirement needed - as someone who just put 60ish hours into these - I wouldn’t care. A new player gets an easier experience? Great!

And I still had some fun. I still learned the BfA lore (SOOO much BfA)

At this point, it should be a quick introduction quest on the Allied race you want and bam you’re in.

Blizz putting out the anti fun mechanics to farm us for time played.

Shame on them.

I feel you OP, and you have my sympathy.

60 hours huh?

  • Looks at posters claiming that unlocking allied races is super easy and takes a couple hours…

Anyway. Not only should they NOT be tied to requirements SINCE THIS IS NOT HOW ANY OTHER RACE WORKS, but these requirements should be eliminated once the content is outdated.

Blizzard has made it 100% clear they give so F’s about anything not current expansion. To leave these requirements in is just trashy at this point.

Thanks - this is a personal annoyance to me, because after unlocking the Vulpera and enjoying them - I was lured into thinking it wouldn’t be too bad of a grind. I was excited about the nightborne because I remember liking their lore in the parts of Legion I did play. But after the grind I’ve just been through - that excitement has worn off.

Unlocking mechagnomes was so pesky that I’ve yet to sit down and play them cause I feel like I need to catch up on my mains now.

But - at least I’ve got my vulpera! >.<

I guess I didn’t notice the ‘grind’ for them when playing, because I was playing during current content, and doing all of the things needed, anyways.
Had them unlocked, without realizing that I did at the time. lol

I think they should just unlock them…I mean…it’s old news now…let people have them, and have fun with them

I’m currently unlocking kultiran since I’m transitioning to the alliance for DF and it’s been about a week and I finally almost have them unlocked. I mainly knew what to do however because I played bfs back when it was current. Still tedious though.
