I’ve unlocked all allied races expect for the nightborne. And while these unlocks were fun at first, they became tedious, painstaking, frustrating, and annoying.
The design of these achievements and questlines were clearly such that you could do them while progressing during BfA content (with the expectation of LF Draenei, Void elves, highmountain tauren, and the nightborne - but most of these would have been quick for people who already fully went through Legion).
I had played for a small time during Legion, but am now just getting back into the game. Thanks to that time, I had everything I needed for LF, tauren, and void. Those took about 1-2 hours each.
I started vulpera for the BfA alliaded race unlocks and got them relativity quickly, same with the Mag’har orcs. Went and did some of the DF content and realized that it wouldn’t take me too long to get the zandalari, so I grabbed those eventually.
At first it was rather enjoyable to level toons in the old content, it soon developed into scouring community discords, google, and addons for help once I started going to the alliance allied races.
I had a max level horde that did basically everything to unlock mechagnomes. Just had to get to Mechagon. Once I confirmed by a clarification post on Jan 2020 from a Blizzard Community manager that this could be done on Horde then you’d get a breadcrumb quest for an alliance alt, I went to do everything on my horde main. Then when I went to find the breadcrumb quest expected for my alliance alt at the stormwind embassy and it wasn’t there. It was not till I was talking with a discord community that I learned this apparently ‘broke’ or no longer works after 10.0.5 DF. Their suggestion was to redo everything on an alliance alt - which worked.
And I think this highlights the annoyance I’ve faced with these unlocks (especially for Kul Tirans, Mechagnomes, and Nightborne) - there have been changes and the requirements have been lessened to an extent, but with so many outdated guides and old clarifications its frustrating when they turn out to be wrong (especially when their official clarifications from Blizzards).
The main advice I’ve gotten from everyone to unlock the nightborne is, “if you get stuck just do every quest you see in suramar” which does not sound like a fun experience. And while the exalted rep for the nightborne is no longer required, you still indirectly need rep for “Uniting the Isles” which unlocks suramar world quests - which are required for you to complete parts of Insurrection (which again highlights the annoyance of all these older guides saying “you don’t have to grind any rep at all”).
The sure fire way I found to unlock a race when I got stuck was to just create a new toon (for the faction of the allied race I wanted to unlock) and start the chromie time fresh for the xpac. I’ve spent about equal time in BfA content (if not more than) DF content - which isn’t the greatest feeling for a returning player.
In total I’ve spent well over 60 hours unlocking them, and still have one left to go. Which will be on hold for a bit while I focus on DF content. Why is there still a ridiculous grind to unlock the allied races after 5 years? Has anyone else ran into these frustrations?
