Normally, I play mage, I have 3x R13 mages on Era, love the class, always fun, not in SOD though. I have a R13 mage on SOD, R13 ele shaman, and a couple boomkins on horde and alliance. I also have a benched shadow priest and warlock. I knew SOD would be FOTM rerolling alt friendly, so I aimed to have every caster available to play. Here’s my experience against the classes from horde and alliance perspective. This is with the current BG health pools + damage reduction % modifiers. World PVP not worth discussing, it’s beyond broken. Whoever gets the jump wins there.
Mage - Full Bis + R13 gear tuesday + ZG 5/5:
Probably the worst class in the game, goes oom way too quickly, and the damage is terrible. I’m ZG exalted and the 5/5 ZG frost spec is terrible. Ice lance does no damage. The best mage spec is a hybrid frost/fire talent spec with the main damage being arcane barrage. Spam 41 yard living bombs and barrage when its off CD, hot streak when bombs proc, and chrono heal. Backline char and is an uphill battle against every class. Spellfrostbolt has a 30 yard range, no pushback resist, ice lance hits for a wet noodle. In fact, everything hits like a wet noodle and you go oom doing it. Living bomb and living flame tick for a very tiny amount of laughable damage. Any time you blanket nerf damage in pvp, it will always ruin mage. Not worth playing right now, and I wish I could enjoy it. I play undead mage so I don’t have to deal with shamans.
Shaman - Full Bis - Ele - Rank 13 tuesday
Shamanistic rage is op, burn flame shock is op. Main weakness of shaman is 20 yard range flame shock, bloodmoon totem will give you 25 yard range which is better, but you have to sit in melee range to do damage, and alliance have a lot of warriors and rets to make your life miserable. Otherwise the class is very solid, borderline op, 1v1 very op, Riptide and ES was good 1v1, but never enough in a 1vx situation, now its just OK in a 1v1 situation. Better now to use the GCD to do damage. Very insane toolkit, but range is not that good.
Boomkin - 1x in full T1, 1x fresh 60.
Boomkin, the ultimate god mode class. Insane mobility, 36 yard range, spells dont even cost mana. Dots tick and crit harder than warlocks and spriest combined. Ranged nukes hit harder than any other class in the game. My random dungeon geared night elf boomkin is annihilating everything, shamans included, and does more damage than my r13 ele or mage. Boomkin on alliance side is more op than on horde and right now I am just doing stupid things on a fresh 60 boomkin. Love Alliance 1 min ab queues compared to horde 15 min queues. You can play boomkin two different ways. 36 yard range line up each team member with 3 dots and starfall, or spam damage turret into one player. TBH you can do both of those. I can’t understand why they do the highest dot damage AND single target. Mobility is insane, stealth, frenzied regend and barkskin + proc healing touches are insane. No mana problems so shifting out to heal and running with travel form is OP. probably one of the most egregiously op classes i’ve played in any version of wow. I crit starsurges for more than lava bursts most of the time due to fire res.
Shadow priest - benched
Not much to say here, damage is average, but you have to choose between average damage or dispersion, can’t have both. No mobility, and mana issues without dispersion. Simply outclassed. Playing disc is much better. If you’re a priest you should heal in bgs as disc for sure.
Warlock - benched
Average Damage, survivability is very high, but a lot of that is tied to your pet, which you spend most of your time healing it, pulling it back, running away, resummoning. Spend more time healing my pet than anything else. Not worth playing there are way better options.
Now, fighting all the classes as different classes in BGs, I can give you a tier list.
- S+ Tier - Disc priest - heals aren’t nerfed, healers make a huge difference
- S+ Tier - Resto druid - the good healing classes are op this meta
- S+ Tier - Boomkin - the class has everything - nothing is better
- A+ Tier - Ele Shaman - huge damage and insane toolkit, it’s like a hunter but with HEALS!
- A+ Tier - Hunter - Since the health pool damage increase, hunter is slightly less op than it was. It was insane when no1 had hp or gear, but now, much more managable. They can’t heal so thats nice.
- A Tier - mortal strike warriors (WITH HEALER SUPPORT) - warriors need healers, but when they have them, they are incredible, and MS is OP. You need a healer to be good though. Solid premade backbone with a healer.
- A Tier - ret paladins. Very nice toolkit, very nice damage, melee range is annoying, but a good ret paladin is a god. Better than warrior solo, similar to warrior with a healer.
- A Tier - rogues. The more hp you have against a rogue, the better. If you don’t have a trinket, lip, or fap against a rogue, they are usually going to win. They are the best class outside of BGs too.
- B - Tier - Shadow Priest
- B - Tier - Warlock
- C - Tier - Holy paladin
- C - Tier - Healer Mage
- F - Tier - Any mage trying to do damage
