My experience as a returning player

  1. Logged in
  2. Absolutely clueless what to do. Completely lost, I’ve played the game off and on for years, AOTC, Hit glad twice, and have enough hours in this to make my family embarrassed. I’m not even a “new player” just someone who has taken most of dragonflight off.
  3. Asked about 20 people for help, finally found someone willing to reply.
  4. Go to new event portal area and take portal to do event.
  5. Oop still have warmode on gotta go back to org and turn it off.
  6. Okay warmode off back to the event.
  7. Instantly killed by a paladin while warmode is off while im sitting in 371 ilvl from start of dragonflight. No chance to to fight back, and no other faction members being attacked. No clue why im able to be pvp’d.
  8. Logged of.

Game is beyond poor experience for returning players. Literal overload of things on your screen, quests everywhere, no guidance, community doesn’t offer any help. It was just one of the worst experiences I’ve had in WoW. I’m going back to the under budget sod teams product because at least there I can understand the game. Sad a small team that blizzard won’t even properly fund has a better new player/returning player experience than whatever retail is now.

5 minute timer still there like it has been for years and years after turning PvP mode off?

Yeah?

Found this one ok though?

So I wouldn’t call you a returning player if you only took “most” of Dragonflight off.

Did you come to the Forums and go here?

Or just straight here?

I think you are too disassociated with what it means to be away. How does someone who doesn’t know that exist find that? Put yourself in the shoes of someone who hasn’t touched the game in a little over a year. How do you know resources exist you either A: Never needed previously, or B: Never knew existed? That’s the question that should be asked before any of this is created. Otherwise you are completely relying on everyone understanding the existence of every resource and knowing where to go and when to go there when you need that resource.

You found SOD forums just fine, you found General Discussion just fine.

No idea.

I stopped playing for a few years, and then came back. Sounds like a skill issue.

I was trying to find out how to get back to this area with a spaceship that I dropped a quest on that I didn’t think I needed. Wasted about 3 hours of time yesterday and couldn’t even get to it. And then the portal area in Dalaran kept giving me a trespasser debuff and teleporting me back to the middle of town over and over again. So I finally just had to wait for my hearth while standing there with nothing accomplished.

They really need to just wipe the slate clean and start a new game.

Can’t even unlock the lightforge draeini or whatever because of a bug where the initial portal you’re supposed to enter won’t even open.

I understand bugs, especially in a game of this size, but it’s pre-patch. It’s an event literally created for leading into the next expansion. Legacy EVERYTHING dragonflight, give a direction to the players of where to go for the pre-patch, and add an optional quest that helps the user get back into the content available for current dragonflight. That’s all it would have taken to increase my personal experience 10000x over.

Were you at the wrong factions portal? I mean I’ve accidentally done this a few times.

It’s always been the case that 5 minutes after turning the flag off, the flag remains on. This is only canceled by taking a flight path or waiting it out. This applies also to exiting from Warmode, so it is advised to take a flight path or wait 5 minutes if you absolutely don’t want to be attacked.

Also, if you’re a returning player, the adventurer’s log will help guide you to what’s new. It’s also helpful to read articles on WoWhead or from the launcher.

Idk, I thought both the stormwind and orgrimmar portals were in the same little area. I’ve never rolled alliance before. Good to know if true.

But, why isn’t there simple text line saying anything about 5 minutes after warmode? I dont remember ever turning it off, but im not up to snuff on gear and can’t compete in pvp so it’s one of the first times I’ve ever turned it off.

These responses don’t target the issue, they are simply explaining why I ran into a problem. The issue is that I can run into that problem without having an easy discoverable path to that information in game. Most people don’t want to spend an hour tabbed out reading wowhead articles to understand stuff. Add simple tooltips that make it easy to understand this as you are playing the game. So you can have an organic learning experience. This isn’t a sandbox mmo, it’s a theme park, put me on the ride so I can start moving down the coaster.

Guy is just here to complain

Fine if that’s how this community feels about people who push feedback about how it feels to return to the game, community deserves to end anyways.

There is a literal timer on your character portrait.

That’s PvP, right? Or is there another Glad thing in WoW that is not PvP?

Didn’t see not timer. Once again, but then again, if I did I wouldn’t know what a timer meant. Game is flooooooded with prompts, details, and overload.

Another issue that comes up is that Google is of little help. A lot of these things from when previous expansions came out are not valid anymore. And not only have they gone through one change, but many times, several changes. And then there’s the classic versions of expansions to deal with.

The great example is that spaceship that starts with a v. Trying to unlock the lightforged race. There’s a bug so the portal didn’t open that I didn’t know was a bug. Hard to tell since there’s so many different ways this used to be done.

I see there’s an emissary for the same spaceship the lightforged race unlock quest talks about, and it’s right outside the embassy where I’m at. It has a purple triangle emblem exclamation point. I assume I need to do that first to get the portal to work.

I started doing it. Follow the quest line and tell it becomes your standard kill mobs. Decide to go back and check, after I finish the current kill quest.

Hearth back. Check embassy. Lightforge race unlock portal still not opening. I figure, okay, maybe I have to finish the whole quest line i picked up from the emissary who’s now disappeared.

So I decided I need to get back to where I was.

In various iterations of the game there were ways. In one way you had to be lightforged already, and go to the boat and stormwind. This isn’t applicable anymore, nor is it mentioned during posts from that time that you need to be lightforged already. Since everybody was already lightforged that would have needed to do this. So I wasted a bunch of time trying that method without that crucial out dated information.

Without turning this into a dissertation of all the other problems that came up, this turned into 3 hours. And I was never able to get back to the place or pick up that quest line I had is started.

And the race unlocked for lightforged is still bugged.

Moral of the story is Blizzard can do a lot better job of adding methods to help the players understand all the changes in game, and that people who have been around long enough will continue to defend the lack of effort to help returning players have a good experience by blaming it on the returning player.

immersion and the world experience almost always fall apart when the devs are chasing metrics with oversystemization and blunt hamster wheels everywhere

devs chasing live service metrics only care about manipulating players, they care less about entertaining

they treat us all like an ant farm to test against

There is a guide recruiter NPC near the embassy in Stormwind and Orgrimmar. For Alliance the NPC is Celeste Periwinkle. For Horde the NPC is Eyla Pathleader. It puts you into a chat channel like general or trade chat, where you can then ask questions and receive answers. It is meant for veteran players to help new/returning players. Green flag symbol next to the name means veteran, murloc head next to the name means new/returning player. It is a helpful feature they added in Shadowlands.

Hi Winfoory. I’m a returning player too. I hear you.

Before the patch I would log onto my main, open my bags, not know what the heck anything was in there anymore, close my bags again. Open my map, see it cluttered and overloaded, feel clueless. Trade chat is full of people advertising prof related stuff in what sounds like a completely different language. Can’t remember how to get places anymore and there’s seemingly 50 portals. Can’t remember how to open certain UI elements (sometimes can’t even find this simple information on Wowhead). Also, the guild finder tool was a steaming pile, and is /who still broken? Because it has been for years. So I was just wandering around alone and feeling lost.

People who have been playing for years don’t understand what it is like to come back to a game that has 20 years of stuff to know. If you’ve been playing without a break then you saw these changes come in patch by patch, so it’s easy to understand and remember, it seems obvious to you. As a returning player it is just an avalanche of information and constant stop-start play because you have to keep dipping out to Google/Wowhead.

The info overload was so much that I ended up rolling a brand new character so that I could replay through SL+ to get back on track and relearn my class and profs from scratch, so then I can go pick my main back up where I left off and hopefully feel less lost.

Also I had absolutely no clue there was a “returning players” section of the forums, and I think it’s ridiculous and unreasonable to berate people for not knowing that.
