My damage is garbage. How can I get gud?

I’m playing a Ret Pally right now. I know the Shockadin build is big news right now (so much, in fact, I honestly wonder if it’s going to get nerfed?), but since I had tremendously poor luck this week (ran every raid except MC and went 5/8 SE, didn’t win a single item and had a few ninja’d), I’m not feeling too optimistic.

I’ve mostly been running pugs, and I’d been feeling pretty good about my 1.5-1.7k dps, since a lot of the pugs weren’t much beyond that.

When I got into Scarlet Enclave, however, I was straight up embarrassed how poorly I was doing compared to the entire raid. I had literal tanks and healers ahead of me in damage for almost the whole raid!

It’s really eye-opening just how large the rift between a great player, and “where I’m at now” really is. As such, I’m making it my mission to try and improve, so I can actually earn a spot in any future Scarlet Enclave.

I’m really curious what all resources you guys can recommend for really getting the most out of your character? How to properly assess which items you have are upgrades over others, getting your ideal rotation down pat?

Worth mentioning I suppose; “Seal-Twisting” seems like the most un-fun build, so I’ve kind of been leaning towards Exodin and hoped eventually to go for the “Wrath-like”. Shockadin looks fun, but I don’t currently have the gear for it and not sure how many weeks it could take given most pugs have that gear HR’d.

For that matter, any addons that help specifically for damage or keeping track of raid mechanics would be great. I have DBM installed, but it doesn’t seem to support SoD officially and freaks out constantly. Also, is Details the best damage meter, or is there another that you would consider more accurate or user-friendly?

If your ego will allow…post on your ret so people can critique your gear and offer advice.

Ret is highly gear dependent and you gotta twist to do damage…stacking is dead.

What he said. Also the fact you are here making a post about how to improve already makes your better than 90% of all paladins.

I recommend you watch a few how to videos on YouTube. Then go to warcraftlogs and search the top parsing paladins. Then click “casts” and “timeline” and see what abilities they are pressing and when.

See their gear and their enchants and make sure you’re running something similar (2p t2, 4p t3, etc).

Then join the SoD paladin discord. Make a post like the one you did here and ask for some guidance.

Do these things here and you’ll increase your dps by probably 50% next week

incorrect, exodin and shockadin are both more than viable

Fair, he seemed to be asking about ret so thats the advice i offered although i didnt consider exodin.

First off, feed you build (gear+talents) into WoWSims with no ‘crazy buffs’; as in buffs you probably won’t have in the raid (like having Leader of the Pack if you’re not ‘always’ in that group). Or consumes you might not use (ie the Mildly Irradiated Rejuv. Potion).

This way you aren’t chasing something that’s impossible.

PS: Shockadin is extremely fun. If you don’t mind PVPing for a couple of months, R14 gear is pretty good ‘entry gear’ for Shockadin. - I ain’na wearing no gerd durn dress! >:{

Go to warcraft logs and click into the top Paladins (or scroll down and find a dude with similar gear to you that is pumping).

See how they are geared. Then go to specific fights and read the order in which they do their rotation (a section in wcl will list their abilities used by time of fight)

Should be a good start to figure out what they do that you don’t
