My computer died last night

It was a sad death as the screen went black and would no longer turn on. I was saddened by the fact it died. As I knew that it means it was time to buy a new one.

I have bought a 3080 and Ryzen 9 5900x

I suppose when a pc dies it means its time to upgrade to a far superior pc.

Did you make sure the cat didn’t walk over and turn off your power strip?

Did you unplug it and plug it back in?

Not saying that your reason isn’t good - It is always a good thing to buy a bigger / better computer

The paper launch was a lie.

Are you a real doctor? Not sure if you’re allowed to call it.

Why do i doubt you got a 5900x and 3080 so fast right after your pc died…

Feelssadman.

Probably the power supply if it won’t turn on at all. Open it up, pull it out and take it to get tested. If that’s what it is, it’s a cheap fix.

I was already planning on buying and upgrading this just front loaded it.

It was more then likely the power supply but I just used it as an excuse to buy it.

Always put a computer on a UPS. Spikes are bad but you’d be surprised how ‘unclean’ your power is. You can have sags in the power or go a little over voltage also. I used to lose servers in my lab at home on occasion and then got a rackmount ‘very smart’ APC UPS. I was blown away by how the power was all over the place on some days. Once the UPS was in place I never lost another server or anything attached to the UPS’s. I also keep my stereo, etc, on a UPS.

Also very very important to have good airflow. I’m not one of those super quiet computer guys. Fans are all over my puter.

Congratz on the new machine. Its always fun learning about new gear.

Several years ago I went down to the basement to get some work done. Descending the stairs I noticed this really awful smell.

Walking into the room I discovered that one of my servers was no longer working. Pulled it out of the rack and took it apart on the workbench.

A 29 cent resistor burned out and shorted 120V AC onto the main power buss of the power supply. There were actual chips blown off the motherboard.

Kiss a $6000 server goodbye. Lesson learned, I put power conditioners on all AC lines.

Have fun with your new computer.

Sure its not just a dead psu? But yeah always go better when replacing a pc I’d say as much as your budget (and conscience) allows!

If it was a pc might of been the monitor died, I know black screen and computer shutting off by itself ment laptop died.

Well if it’s any consolation the battery died in my car this morning, which is why I’m home to write these comments.

Ouch, that sucks. Did you back up all your files?

Maybe they live near a microcenter or something similar. My spouse had to take my credit card away the first time I walked into one of those…

A good way to test any computer is pull all addon cards, sata cables, basically everything but CPU, ram, and power. Pull all external USB devices except for the keyboard also. Reseat the ram and power supply connector. Even the CPU if you can somewhat easily. Then try to power it on.

I have built hundreds of computers and worked on a great many. Connectors oxidize. They are just metal. Sometimes components can be causing electrical problems. I have seen computers sit on a black screen from a drive going bad and unplugging the sata cable allowed it to boot. Ram, I’ve seen it cause a PC to sit on a black screen and reseating it made it fine as rain. Etc, you name it. Unplug all you can and test core components. Then work back from that.

Well that’s good at least!

Ya my buddy had me try all of that I am unsure what you mean by UPS and the other stuff you said though.

But I did unplug everything held power down for 30 seconds unplugged power did 30 seconds then put it in and all the other.

I’m 90% sure it’s the power supply I’ll prolly buy a new supply for it and give it to my nephew but as of now I’m like time to upgrade to max.
