My Battlenet Authenticator Passes Away at age 15

7 dollars well spent almost 15 years ago, but the little guy has finally moved on. I can’t believe how much time we spent together, and how long its battery kept on going. I’ll never forget my battlenet authenticator and how it braved the drawer of my computer desk. Or how it fended for itself during Mop through SL when I didn’t want to play WoW, only to brightly come back to me in Classic and SoD and DF.

I’m sad my battlenet authenticator won’t get to see TWW, but I imagine it’ll be in my memories for a while as I reach for my phone instead. Dunno if I have the heart to bury it in the trashcan or just keep it in the drawer it’s always been.

Goodbye little battlenet authenticator. I’ll miss you. :frowning:

To anyone actually reading this, lol. Do you have one that still works?

And now his watch is ended.

This suddenly reminds me of Harold’s wristwatch in Stranger than Fiction.

I still have one. For some reason the phone Authenticator doesn’t work anymore so I had to switch back to the physical one about 2 months ago.

My physical one died and it’s part of the reason I finally got a smartphone.

I got one from Blizzcon 2008 and mine still works. I don’t use it much as I use the text message option instead most of the time, but I checked and it’s still holding out for now.

I have no idea what happened to my physical one, but I haven’t used it in at least a decade.

You can replace the battery inside but it will never spit out numbers again it will always give an error message

How do I get my phone Authenticator working again? For some reason the app thing doesn’t work. It’s retire or something.

Can you open him up and replace the battery? It probably takes a watch battery. Shouldn’t be too hard.

Nah, mine died maybe like 7 or 8 years ago. Had it for about 10 years before it died, I think. Still have it on my keychain as a keepsake and have even been asked a couple of times by cashiers at my local store if I still play.

Do your own checking - but if you want to believe me, i’ve read that it has a low rate of success, (battery replacement) another option is to buy a fob, although there are fobs for sale on the internet, yet they also have a low rate of success. I wish it was possible to just pay bliz - “hey i would like to advance all my accounts and I will pay for the time for your guide” i would pay for someone to update all my accounts (e-mail, phone, ) to which I have to enlist bliz aid (for free)

Replacing the battery without the device being bricked is pretty hard in these. If it loses power for any amount of time it won’t work anymore. People have done it before with external batteries, there are a couple Youtube videos around, but it requires some skills that most people don’t have.

The authenticator app is retired because it was moved to the battle.net app. You can download that instead.

Mine still works. I feel like every activation at this point may be its last…
