My 0-kill streak has ended at level 54 after flying over Shrine of the Storm

Well, my attempt at leveling a 0-kill, 0-quest pacifist monk “Voxgeekus” has come to an end after a valiant effort.

I rolled a Human Monk with the personal goal of leveling and maintaining a pacifist character without questing or inflicting any damage in-game.

From the beginning I removed all offensive skills/spells from my toolbar, keeping only the “Roll” and Sky Golem on Toolbar #1. I walked around Elwynn Forest and Westfall until level 5, then took up Herbalism/Mining to gather my way to level 10. Since then I’ve been herbing and riding/flying for exploration as the only means of gaining XP.

As for proof of completing 0 quests, it was clear from the start this would not be provable, as my statistics indicated from the beginning that I had completed 113 quests although I’ve never manually accepted any; those that were automatically accepted (intro quests to new expansions) were quickly abandoned.

Throughout my playtime, I’ve obsessively been checking my statistics tab for “Kills” to see that it remained at 0, usually every few minutes.

My environmental path of progression began in Northshire Valley and I covered every bit of terrain (that allows flying) in each expansion successively, in order of release.

I had just dinged 54 last night in eastern Stormsong Valley, and my stats still showed 0 kills. However, moments later I flew over Fate’s End and got the status warning when flying over the island where Shrine of the Storm is located, and upon earning discovery XP for the island, I quickly flew away before the threatening status took hold.

Safely hovering over the surrounding waters, I checked my statistics tab and was sad to see I now have 1 kill — a “beast” apparently.

I was never visually engaged in any encounter on the island, and I never landed anywhere on the island. I have no idea how a kill was attributed, but nevertheless, my stats are now tainted, which is a bummer.

It would be nice to know what caused it, but it is what it is, and it was a fun attempt. If only WoW still offered a “total damage caused” stat, I might be able to prove I’ve personally never auto-attacked or cast any offensive spells, but that’s not to be.

My total play time as of last night is 1 day, 7 hours.

At least in the past, many quests and similar scripts really only had one true trigger: on-kill. To fake other kinds of triggers, devs would create an invisible critter (a bunny rabbit, I think) that would be killed in order to give credit for progression. I don’t know if they still have to use the same system, but I imagine there are a lot of vestiges of the original set-up still.

My best guess would be that you ran into one of those that was mistakenly flagged as an internal kill still.

Time for your character to retire to a life of picking herbs in Pandaria, sick with the thought that he took a life.

You sleep rather soundly for a murderer.

Fascinating, and a bit of a comfort / element of emotional closure. I wonder and suspect if perhaps this dev mechanic is one of many reasons there isn’t an achievement available for “Pacifist” such as reaching a certain level with 0 kills.

Nevertheless, it was a fun concept to try out.

That being said, I will probably keep going to max level and will hopefully still have an impressively low kill-count as a conversation piece for those who find it amusing — along with a bittersweet tale explaining my “1” kill

Sorry man, good run though, not an easy feat in a game designed for killin stuff.

I will also chime in with this: You are wearing heirloom gear. When you level up, you explode and inflict AoE damage, which is capable of killing a creature hit by it.

Reminds me of Ace Ventura when the slinky stopped at the second-to-last step of the temple.

Back in the Legion attack-on-the-Exodar scenario, you could see invisible rabbits silhouetted in the Fel glow of certain gateways.

oh that is incredible. I will have to redo that scenario on another character and look closely.

OP’s great campaign came to an end after accidentally killing a roach.

Hate to see it.

NICE CATCH. This means there is hope for me in the future to pull it off proper. If I ever… decide it’s worth another try.

Reminds me of when giantgrantgames was trying to do pacifist runs in warcraft 3 or starcraft 2 and one of the CUTSCENES counted as a lost unit (which he then replayed and fixed by skipping the cutscene asap)

You are a prime candidate for an auto level token.

Or start over and try it again. It’s like the complete opposite of a survival hard core. Pacifist Core. - also a new metal. Sub genre of christian rock.

Jesus was a rolling stone…
