Who do you have in your meetings thinking it makes sense to make mutilate a lower energy cost, more combo point generator (w/ no rune required) and to keep backstab where it is normally at. In the current state there is 0 reason to use backstab.
It would make more sense to increase mutilate energy cost to be the same as backstab tbh or to make backstab with mutilate. Speaking from a rogue player who does constant WSG queues it just makes 0 sense how no Blizzard dev stepped in to say this idea makes 0 sense.
With Slaughter from the Shadows you can bring Backstab and Ambush down to 40 energy as well, but you give up Deadly Brew as well. I hate the fact they they shoved mutilate down our throats and hope this changes in S4, but it is unlikely to be honest. Not all rogues want to play dagger rogues in the end, and we should have options available like other class/specs.
Remove Shiv and move Slaughter from the Shadows to Hands, or just move Slaughter from the Shadows to feet. This still doesn’t solve the combo point advantage Mutilate offers over everything else though.
They need to combine the Saber Slash effect with Sinister Strike rather than making those two separate abilities and also make it reduce the energy cost of Sinister Strike to 35 (without improved Sinister Strike). This would open up some options for Swords.
The fact that the only reason Rogues are competitive dps is because they reduced Mutilates energy cost to 40 just shows how badly designed and thought out this whole rune thing has been.
I’m pretty much done here now. Just read the forums now and then but SoD is no longer interesting to me.
If they didn’t make additional adjustments yeah. Mutilate at 40 energy has been a panic move they made since P2 and they haven’t taken the time to actually adjust the class ever since then. They finally got around to making Saber Slash be something more than just an LOL spec after P1. Honestly, I don’t think anyone on the dev team plays the class and at this point they are very much relying on Wrath numbers for the class. It sucks.
It isn’t an issue for you. It is very much an issue for me. I honestly think part of this is because I am a long time rogue player and it feels like they just took the Wrath version of the class and said “here” rather than actually developing the class.
Currently. Given the correct gear (which doesn’t exist this phase) that might not remain true. My point isn’t that it is good right now. It isn’t. My point is that it took them this long to even bother trying.
Personally, I enjoy the rapid combo point generation mutilate provides… not sure why everyone is hating on it as if Backstab spam or Sinister Strike spam was any different. In fact, mutilate spam offers more opportunity to mix in finishers beyond SnD and Eviserate… lol
I was always a dagger rogue in vanilla/classic so the current SOD rogue play doesn’t bother me. Maybe these guys miss seeing the big crits from Ambush and Backstab in PVP?
Without some changes though, Sword spec is not going to be able to compete with Deadly Brews, Mutilate, and Envenom… would be cool if we saw swords focus more on bleeds and daggers focus more on poisons. I feel like the foundation is already there to make this possible.
Sure…except tanking rogue is something new. They could have given that level of thought toward the dps side as well.
I prefer backstab actually. They even have a rune that was intended to make it work in the game in a way it hasn’t since mutilate was introduced (this has been true basically since the expansions, so it isn’t like mutilate only trumps it in classic). The fact that they have a rune lowering the energy of backstab to 40 energy shows they know Mutilate shouldn’t be 40 energy. Mutilate is a stronger attack. It always has been.
Well, for people who prefer using swords, the weapons are the difference. It isn’t really raids where you will see a difference though. It is solo / pvp and only if Mutilate is 60 energy because the way you time your energy is drastically different at 60 energy vs 40 energy. This is further differentiated if you want to play a backstab style which has an additional positioning requirement that Mutilate doesn’t have and requires much better CP + energy management open world / pvp than mutilate does.
Rogue doesn’t make sense period in SoD. You said there’s no reason to use Backstab. There’s so reason to use like 80% of the Rogue runes lmao.

They should move Deadly Brew to the Wrist. Delete Shiv. Make Shadowstrike usable outside of stealth or delete. Can prolly just delete Poisoned Knife. HAT sucks in PVP, they should move HAT to the boots or something.
They need to do some work.
Quick Draw is a win. Use that to kite other melee and gap close. BtE is one of the best abilities Rogues ever got in WoW, I use 1-2 point BtEs as ranged interrupts a lot. In fact the Quick Draw into a BtE to interrupt a CC is invaluable.
I agree that poisoned knife is garbage. Shuriken throw needs something to make it more worthwhile to tanks, whether it’s more threat or damage or something. I’d like to see Deadly Brew moved to make it available to tanks as well.
Having HAT and Combat Potency would be a bit strong, and I like to availability of Waylay for PvP in the slot that it’s in. I’d like to see Deadly Brew probably moved to Waist even. Focused Attacks is pretty much a wash, not sure why they gave us that, though I haven’t tried it with Shuriken throw at all to see its energy gain viability.
Unfair Advantage should function off both parry and dodge and have a cooldown on each separate target. Main Gauche gives up too much right now with mutilate being in it’s spot.
I personally would enjoy backstab being competitive again for PvP angle. If I want to wield a Skull of Impending Doom that means I can’t attack anymore with mutilate whereas if I was backstab I can still do damage with Skull equipped.
Saber slash should just make it so if you use sinister strike you get a buff that gives all your melee attacks a 50% chance to apply the bleed, and change the bleed to affect damage of all physical melee attacks, not just SS.
