Randomly, but a guild gave me an invite while i was leveling. The guild isn’t in my realm and the last time i’ve played was in Cata. No one really talks in g chat. Does everyone talk like in discord now? Also is it good to be in a large guild like this? Or should I be trying to aim for guilds within the same realm?
What you appear to have found is called a cesspool guild.
A guild where nobody really cares, and it’s basically just a 2nd trade chat
You should be looking for a guild that fits your wants. If you aren’t in a guild though, you’re going to get spammed by invites and whispers. Can’t do anything about the whispers but you can block guild invites in the settings menu.
I’m in a few guilds for different purposes, I find that works better for me.
So a guild randomly invited one of my newest alt’s (not even level 15 yet) just on Sunday . There’s nearly 1000 members in the guild.
I said hello. Haven’t said a single word beyond that yet. I disabled guild chat.
Why ? Only in this character I speak am I doing this little experiment. I wanna see how long before I’m booted for saying nothing. I also wanna see if anyone notices.
These mega sized guilds that just invite . They are jokes. They just want numbers because the officers want to say my guild is legion we have these many members.
There is a side benefit for me though I get the faster hearth stone and any other perks from being in a guild. At least until I’m booted…
Never…ever accept invites from folks who: 1. use trade chat, as you know that’s their demographic and unless you like politics and social drama that’s not going to be you (unless again you like causing fights and IC/OOC suffering),
or 2. Whisper you without consideration while you’re leveling… like wait until the new person is in a city or something, cause if I die to something trivial on my alt while trying to shoo away a guild invite randomly popping up or they whisper me repeatedly while I’m busy questing, I’m both ignoring and declining the invite.
I say this as a GM, little courtesy will do both your recruits AND YOU, a world of difference, as will being selective, just cause you have numbers or pull in X number of recruits doesn’t mean you’re successful, a king who reigns over a kingdom of garbage is not a king, they’re a landfill manager.
Mass invite guilds only care about the numbers in their guild, not always about fostering a community
I’m in a multiple server guild…the only difference is…we all know each other from farming TLPD. It was a natural progression to continue to play together.
There are so many gigantic guilds that are only recruiting for attrition. I tend to stay away from those guilds because the talk in guild chat can be completely off the wall.
I recommend you whisper the person who is inviting you and see if they are people you want to game with. Our guild is 18+ and that’s just because a lot of us are prior military. Cussing just pops out every once in awhile.
I had the same guy invite me to the same guild twice after I already told him no twice just for him to get upset at me because I had no interest in raiding, even though I already told him 3 times I had no interest in raiding, just to kick me.
EDIT: Specifically a guild for older adults with busy schedules too and he immediately was like “hey we need you to submit your raiding schedule to the discord”
It’s amazing a place like that continues to exist and function, at least if that was the GM.
So, are you inferring that any guild that recruits via TC are basically just political and will eventually have in fighting within the guild? Because that’s how I read the first part of your statement.
I’m the banker for my guild and I often utilize TC for recruitment. If someone wants to join, they whisper me and we start a dialogue. I only recruit in major cities and never open world. That’s just bad etiquette.
I monitor TC because sometimes I see someone looking for a guild to join. So I whisper and get a general feel for the person.
We have rules in my guild. Zero political talk… period. Also everyone needs to be 18+. We cuss, it’s what the Navy taught me and perfected.
It was just some officer and I ended up blocking him, but the entire interaction just had me scratching my head.
I usually just ask a buzz topic question and decline to join based on their answer, no matter what their answer is.
If they want to whisper telemarket me, I’ll destroy their faith in humanity.
Most of em, not all of em, but it is sort of an initial redflag. I’ve also the 3 or 4 I’ve ever managed to get off Trade weren’t very contributive or productive, in any capacity, just sat there not talking in G chat, but look over in Trade and they’re running their mouths 0-90 with mad trash talk. Latest person I asked when they said LF guild and asked what kind: “One with a hearthstone.”
You might find some gold nuggets, but I wouldn’t say it’s a good route in general for recruitment.
Very fair point, but not so much as to warn others away. It’s rare, but gems do exist.
no one is going to boot you for not talking unless you are on a RP server then those guys do strange stuff.
Yeah, now come help me summon Dormammu…I need more sacrifices.
Hasn’t faith in humanity already been destroyed?
Asking for a friend.
I got kicked from a guild on a RP server for not saying anything on a character I barely played…
I mean, as a GM, why SHOULD anyone keep someone who isn’t on and doesn’t do anything? RP guilds want folks who’ll be on and do stuff WITH other people, even if that’s just a convo or two a week in the guild chat.
Why have a guild if not going to do anything with it? It’s like having a vacuum I never use, I could sell the vacuum for money for something I DO use.
