PLEASE don’t revive that.
I don’t mean to, but he was making very vicious accusations against someone (not sure if it was you, me or someone else).
It was me. Feel free to DM me in-game if you want to discuss it.
Thanks, I’ll consider it. We disagreed on a little bit, but neither of us matches those accusations.
The problem I have with this complaint is this exact story, a people moving from their beloved homeland after either a genocide, war, or disaster, in fiction and in real life, to a far away land, is very common.
And in fiction, is a plot line that is central to a lot of beloved stories. We just had an extremely well received one in Elemental for instance, especially in South Korea.
Look at the history of the Irish immigrants for instance and the potato famine which was nearly a genocide. They certainly never lost their identity in the US despite being an ocean away from their homeland. And that was nearly 200 years ago nowI mean, there’s even St. Patrick’s Day is a national holiday now.
And today there’s tens of thousands of Ukrainian refugees coming in. They’ll likely never be able to go back. It’s extremely tragic. But it’s realistic.
If you want them to write a fantasy where everything winds up perfect and ideal, that’s fine. But, how the Night Elves have a new home on a new continent is what is realistic. And it is a very common plot in other fiction as well. It is not them being callous.
Except, as we’ve pointed out dozens of times, the writing is so inconsistent. The books say they are fortifying their position in Kalimdor and the in-game representation is the exact opposite and suggests they are abandoning Kalimdor.
Amirdrassil is definitely the new capital, Mathaelar. I don’t think anyone is denying that part. I think the questionable part about your headcanon is that you are claiming that they won’t continue to have a presence in Kalimdor. It’s pretty simple minded to assume that a group of people can only be in one place. The Worgen (who had it much worse than the Night Elves, by the way), moved their home to Darnassus but there were still plenty of them running around other parts of the world
You can’t seriously be claiming that descendants of Irish immigrants have fully retained Irish culture and ways of life by pointing to a holiday that is grossly appropriated, can you?
Care to explain that one?
Thanks for posting this. This quote (from an actual Blizzard developer) basically disproves all the doom and gloom propaganda that the Night Elf extremists are pushing on us.
The issue with this logic is that it does not apply, at all, to this situation.
See in real history and fiction based on history, these things have happened, and when they do happen it is because a powerful military force was behind everything. They’re the ones who force the people to leave, and in history they often keep the land that they took, preventing the people they chased out from returning.
And that might have been the fate of the Night Elves during BFA. It wasn’t clear whether the Night Elves would be canonically winning the Battle of Darkshore and reclaiming their lands, or if they were going to lose and the Horde were going to take the majority of the territory that the Night Elves considered ‘theirs’.
But we know better now. The Night Elves not only won the Battle of Darkshore, but they pushed the Horde out of their lands back to their borders, pre-war of thorns. They even managed to claim territory from the Horde. So there is no military force pushing the Night Elves out. There’s no evidence, at all, that the Night Elves are even going to leave Kalimdor. Only that refugees displaced by the Burning of Teldrassil are finding a new home.
That’s it.
Do you actually play the game or do you just complain on the forums? Should be self-explanatory
What’s the point of moving their capital if they have stable holdings on Kalimdor, then? Why do it? Why not have Amirdrassil just be a new World Tree and not the capital and “home” to a people?
I’m just wondering how you think the Gilneans have it worse.
Except I directly showed how NPCs unrelated to Teldrassil and from all over Kaldorei society are calling it their new home. If Teldrassil was their main population hub, and only refugees from Teldrassil are moving to Amirdrassil, what population is remaining on Kalimdor? Soldiers?
No. But I am pretty sure only they care about that, which is all that really matters.
But for the first couple generations, definitely was. Though that’s a bit off topic.
Point is, this happens. It’s realistic. And it’s popular in fiction as well, likely because it’s relatable.
all the nelves that didn’t live in teldrassil
The loss of Gilneas was more impactful than the loss of Teldrassil, considering that it was the size of a postage stamp to begin with, and they had no other territory or outposts anywhere on Azeroth. They also didn’t get a new zone or an entire patch dedicated to them, unlike you ungrateful folks.
And for all your bluster, you’ve yet to show a single shred of evidence that the Night Elves are leaving Kalimdor.
Where are the receipts?
Where’s the proof that the Night Elves are leaving Ashenvale, Feralas, Moonglade, Hyjal, Stonetalon etc. Where is the proof!
I do think this is a difference between me and some other fans. When I first started my first impression of Night Elves was a people still somewhat reeling from the loss of their immortality. It was a sacrifice and sort of a tragic intro. I kinda viewed the Sundering, Illidan’s story, and elves in general in that light to some extent. And the Blood Elves also have a lot of loss as well
Anyway, all that to say that I guess I view loss in game as an interesting thing for rp and associate elves with tragedy. So that part doesn’t necessarily bother me.
The parts that bother me more is when the more kickass moments seem to be somewhat undercut. Like lore wise their new home didn’t have to be on the dragon isles.
