Move Mail Crafting from Leatherworking to Blacksmith

Crafting mail as a leatherworker makes no sense. Blacksmiths were the mail OGs and mail needs returned to its rightful profession.

Make blacksmiths be the mail crafters again.

are you sure about that?
LW can make mail armor in vanilla days

I was about to say, LW could make mail way back then due to hunters etc.

Acccccssssshhhuuuaaaalllyyyyyy…

They are shared. BS can craft certain mail gear. But the majority of it is on LW. Which I agree is illogical considering what LW stands for.

Most of the mail crafted armor is scale mail, but it’s literally made from the scales of creatures, hence why it’s outside of the Blacksmith’s wheelhouse.

I’d be fine with moving Mail armor to Blacksmithing, as long as all of the weapons are moved to Leatherworking in exchange.

:smile_cat:

seeing as mail armor is apparently made with scales a skinner gets from creatures I guess it makes sense… of late. Idk I recall mail being on Blacksmith till LW started weaving scales together to form items like scalemail pants, but hey at least Blizz didn’t make JC make mail armor as then it’d be full of sparkly gemstones and painfully colorful whether you want it such or not

There are artifacts in the aesthetics because mail/plate wearers used to use leather/mail until level 40. So “mail” started out as chainmail / blacksmithing themed and then abruptly switched to scalemail / leatherworking themed. But then some chainmail references snuck back in for hunters because it’s “mail” and, well, it’s all a bit of a mess.

Yes and no.

Ring mail and Chain mail is something a blacksmith does. Your forging rings and chain links to make the mail armor.

Scale mail is something a leatherwork does. Your stitching together scales from creatures into armor.

It may be considered mail armor but it is split into 2 professions.

At least it was, thing is when they changed the armor so warriors and paladins were in plate from the start, and hunters and shaman were in mail from the start, they removed the metal mail from the game and made it all scale mail.

no thank u

Just make all the Mail type armors that Blacksmithing crafts into Plate armor types, and change the stats accordingly. That’s how it should have been from the beginning of the armor changes. Blacksmithing made Mail for Warriors & Paladins until level 40 and then made Plate for Warriors, Paladins, and Death Knights. With the change, all that Warrior & Paladin oriented gear was oddly switched to Agility Mail. Some people might say “Well, that’s because Hunters and Shaman wear Agility Mail pre level 40 now” but they also added Agility Mail to Leatherworking. So right now both Blacksmithing and Leatherworking create Agility Mail, while Blacksmithing creates no Plate until later.

I suppose there should be some thought put into how classes were way back in the olden days. Back when it started, plate-wearing classes wore Mail, not Plate, until they reached about level 40 if I recall. While mail-wearing classes all wore leather until they too upgraded to wearing Mail. So pre-40 blacksmithing armor would all be mail while Leatherworking was all leather until reaching the level 40 gear where it branched out between leather and mail.

Another thing lost to the ages of time.
