This post I wrote a long time ago is about a right-click issue, but the core concept applies to any mouse button not clicking properly:

If so, then: Close everything and just get a blank desktop. Right-click and hold anywhere in a blank space. Drag the “window” around for a minute. Does it hold the “window” shape, or does it turn into the context menu? (View, Sort By, Refresh, etc.) As much as the community may insist software or game issues cause these mouse problems, my …

To make things more complicated, when a mouse starts to fail, the fail is intermittent. It might happen one day and not the next. It might happen in one game and not another. It’s pretty random until the switch is pushed beyond the “starting to fail” point.
