Mouse Clicking... Does it really matter?

It’s 2005 15 year old me jumped into his first ever MMO… not a clue as to what to do as I only had console experience. Click, click, click… I did it… Keybinds? I learned them but clicking was just habit and felt more comfortable…fast forward to today I still do a mix of both.
Do you believe mouse clicking makes you a bad player?
I succeeded deep into AQ40 at the time and was decent at PvP (Lieutenant General). Had great success all the way into WoTLK where I quit after.
Just looking for your thoughts and any data to show the difference. Do you still click? Both?

Grinding a rank in vanilla was no indication of skill fyi.

Just an odd off-hand thought.

I key bind everything. Feels like a tremendous advantage to me except in one way. When in WSG and an opponent drops the flag, I never knew where my cursor was sitting on the screen, I used the mouse just to move my toon so the cursor could be up in any corner or even slightly off screen - so I tended to be a day late and a dollar short clicking the flag. Always wished I could create a macro that would position the cursor to the center of the screen and click on it.

I think you can be good and still click, but you’re at a disadvantage so it takes more work to be equal.

Disagree… you were competing with other players for rank. You had to get kills & wins to rank higher. To get kills & wins you kinda need skill. Majority of players over rank 10 had decent skill.

You are obviously a better player if you don’t click. I’m not saying you are better than everyone who does click, but your a better player for not clicking.

You will not be as quick with clicking clutch abilities than you are with keybinds, this is obvious and doesn’t need any data, you should know this.

With clicking you will be staring at your abilities like 80% of the time making you as bad as someone who is texting and driving. You don’t REALLY see whats going on because you are staring at your abilities. This also doesn’t need data this is common sense.

When I started trying to pvp, everyone said clicking was a disadvantage. I would have to agree with them. It took awhile but I finally got keybinding down and I never looked back.

only time I click now is for fight specific macros that I won’t want to necessarily key bind for a single fight. I guess also profession tabs on my bar.

Incorrect. It just took time. A bad player who play an hour a day longer than a good one will be at a higher rank. Rank in vanilla has 0 correlation to skill.

The thing is that if you weren’t good you could always just replace quality with quantity, since all that really mattered was farming a bunch of CP.

Plus, keybinding everything is simply going to allow for faster reaction times once you get used to it which naturally leads to being a better player.

Imagine not clicking your spells directly out of your spell book in first person in order to feel like a real wizard

You don’t need skill to rank in Classic. Just a lot of time and a monthly welfare check.

Just be you my friend - obviously you had fun. I say if you want to live in a Yurt, Yurt it up! Play in the way it feels best for you.

Feel like everyone should play like this… sounds hardcore.

Clicking simply makes your experience a bit less fluid. You briefly lose some control of your character if you have to click which makes its not ideal in pvp.

I don’t think clicking is a big deal in simplistic movement battles (some raid encounters), but it leads to more situations were you would be standing in fire or out of position.

I probably won’t bind all my consumables or group buffs, depends on the amount of spells my class has.

Well seeing as hitting a key on the keyboard is always going to be at least a hundred or so milliseconds faster than clicking and also seeing as you cannot move and click abilities at the same time effectively, yes.

Clicking makes you bad.

I do a mix of both. Everything in my rotation as well as my CC abilities are keybound, but abilities I rarely use, along with professions, hearthstones, etc. I click. Do I need tailoring on a hotkey? No, no I do not.

That’s in the eyes of someone clicking and skeying, I really doubt you were aware of who was really good and who wasn’t realistically.

That’s because most people back then were clickers. Nowadays, people are going to run circles around someone who keyboard turns and clicks abilities.

This is coming from someone who was a clicker in vanilla. I played a shaman, and used the massive amount of spells I had as an excuse not to get better.
