Yo guys,
WoW noob here… never played retail. How do mounts work in this game? I’m a 38 human rogue now, and wanted to get this sorted before hitting 40.
Do I HAVE to pick an ugly horse since I’m human? Can I not choose one of the other race’s mounts? Like… that night elf wolf/tiger thingy is sexy AF. Is there anyway I can pick something different? Or will I be stuck with the horses?
Thanks
You can use the other races mounts if you get to exalted reputation with that city. If you wanted to ride a night elf cat, you would need to be exalted with Darnassus.

Best way to do that is go to their starting zone and do all their quests even if they are gray.
Is getting exalted difficult to do?
It’s a time sink. As a human, I never got to exalted in any other faction in vanilla. It wasn’t until one or two expansions came out that I managed it.
You’ll be doing a lot of grey quests for a few pieces of silver and likely irritating the low levels who need those quests. But hey, it’s a tough world out there.
If you’re contemplating making the Exalted grind, i would advise against it at level 40. Get your horse so you can at least get around quicker and suck it up until you’re 60. At 60, you can definitely aim for getting an epic Nightsaber instead of an armored horse.
I would advise against going around doing low level grey quests in the NE starting zones like some have mentioned. Not only do you get reduced rewards, you get reduced rep as well, making it really just a colossal waste of time all around.
The fastest method would probably be to focus on making sure you quest in zones with Darnasus rep (such as Feralas) from now going forward, and at 60, focus on grinding out cloth for turn-ins instead.
Turn-ins will give you way more rep for your time, and generate a lot of gold from vendoring greys and silver pickups at the same time. You could even start doing this at level 58 or 59, and polish off your last few bars with the XP from the initial cloth turn ins if you’re really trying to be efficient.

To get exalted in a different race, work all of their zones for maximum rep on rewards. You still won’t make it to exalted but it will make you a lot closer. Then do cloth turn ins. You can turn in wool, silk, and mageweave once each, and then turn in as much runecloth as you want until you make exalted. That’s how you do it. Or wait for the war effort for Ahn’ Qiraj and turn in a buttload of mats.
man I forgot about that completely, such memories lol.
Hopefully that’s still a LONG way off though.
You’re going to need runecloth…lots of runecloth for turn-ins if you want something else before AQ hits.
Ragefist nailed it, just pimp the horse for now. It beats running anyway.
