I cannot for the life of my figure out which character of mine has the highest mount count because the experiments I have tried this past week have given some strange results.
I currently have the 6 mounts from the 3 main BFA factions on horde side. I figured horde would be my highest count, because I did not buy any of the BFA alliance 3 main faction’s mounts. However, when I did buy my first one, my ALLIANCE druid’s count went up by 1. This was strange, because I figured my paladin would have my druid beat… So I went over to Horde side and picked up the Rustbolt Resistor on a maxed horde druid, where the count did not change at all.
So I first identified my alliance druid as who seemed to have the highest “count”. However, when I bought the rustbolt resistor on horde side, I logged back over to alliance, and the alliance count did not move! So for whatever reason, the rustbolt resistor purchase on horde side did not count for my total on alliance side, despite being able to mount that thing on all alliance characters.
What gives here??? Why isn’t my paladin the one with the highest mount count?? Why didn’t my count go up with the purchase of the rustbolt resistor?
EDIT:: I just went and bought a 2nd mount from the Alliance BFA factions, and the count did indeed go UP!!! wtf??? The BFA alliance faction mounts shouldn’t be adding to my count since I already have all 6 on horde side… this is odd.
Not at all. A lot of BfA mounts do not have Horde counterparts (or vice versa) so they’re a +1 no matter what toon you’re on.
Well the question behind why the rustbolt resistor didn’t increase my count stands. And also… if you say those count no matter what toon I’m on… how does that make sense??
I buy a mount from the voldunai on horde side, then I cannot use that mount on alliance side. How does it make sense that that horde mount would count but rustbolt resistor does not???
Something doesn’t make sense here
The Resistor does count but it may take a few logins to update. Mount collecting is pretty borked atm.
And just because you can’t use the mount does not mean it doesn’t count. The class hall mounts are a good example of that. They are a +22 if you complete every class and get every color.
Really? Class mounts somehow count for the entire total??? Despite the fact that the achievement explicitly states “Usable by ONE character”???
Pardon my disbelief… I guess I can believe that with how awful Achievement tracking has been since inception, but wow… just wow… Would be nice to know what I am actually working toward. Guess that’s too much to ask.
Do you have a source that each class mount somehow counts for a grand total on all classes?
I don’t know where to find it now. This is old news. Back when I was collecting them, I watched the count under my Statistics go up every time I got a new one (did it on all 12 classes.) If you don’t believe me, you can always try it for yourself. Or Google it.

Just posting a last time in case anyone else comes across this with a similar question… I just completed the paladin class mount chain and once I was done with that, my count jumped up +3 immediately and then another +3 when I purchased the additional paladin recolors with order resources. So It seems like there must be some issue with switching Horde/Alliance as your primary mount collector. I can only assume that the rustbolt resistor was included in the initial +3 that I saw upon finishing the paladin class mount quest.
It does also appear that buying the faction specific mounts in BFA counts for the total. So even if you are alliance, you can still boost your count by going and getting exalted with Zandalari Tribe, Talanji’s expedition, and Voldunai on a horde alt. At least, I proved to myself that it works vice versa of that, anyway.
So, the mount count wording is incorrect. It is not based on useable mounts on a character, but rather which character has the most unique mounts.
Basically nearly every mount counts towards the achievment even cross faction. The only mounts that don’t are the classic city rep mounts, pvp mounts and Honorbound/7th Legion. Basically every other mount in the game will give you a plus +1 such as the Bee mount even though its alliance specific, will count on horde. The BFA faction rep mounts also count across both factions because they are not the same reputations.
Non Legion Class mounts only count for the class you are on so Paladins will show the highest count possible if you have all their mounts. Legion class mounts also count across all classes.

“Basically nearly every mount counts towards the achievment even cross faction.”
FALSE. At least it used to be- the Prepatch took away the ability to see the correct mount count usable on a single toon under the radar, and I am still trying to figure out if it’s gone or someplace else now…
The number that USED to count for mounts usable on a single character used to be under Achievements - Statistics tab - Character - Gear. Here there was a count of the mounts that counted toward to the achievements. Prior to the patch, I had 479 listed.
Also- you used to be able to Inspect other players and Compare Achievements, then go to Statistics - Character - Gear and see their mount-count.
Only- the “Gear” selection is no longer there! For anyone! So the only way to my knowledge to compare accurate mount-counts against other players and the only way to see how many of your mounts counted toward the achievements on your specific toons has been taken away! I now show 527 mounts on the Mounts page- which is about right all-told with other class-specific and Horde mounts- but obviously not all of them can be summoned by my Alliance Paladin.
@Blizz Blues- is this intended? Is there a mount-count for 1 toon I am missing? Or are collectors who play both factions suddenly at a HUGE mount-count advantage because ALL of their account mounts count now?
If anyone else can figure out where the mount count went in Statistics post here!

Its not false, just because Blizz removed the statistic counter doesn’t make my statement false, its 100% true. Cross faction mounts count as long they aren’t pvp, classic city rep and a few other outliers but everything else is free game such as BFA rep mounts, the Bee, Kuafon and the Child of Torcali etc on both factions.

the mount achieve has been wonky for quite some time, (I’ve seen some posts which claim counter went DOWN when they learned a mount, even) which is why I (and many mount collectors) used to check the character stats page for an accurate count for “mounts owned” However I have no idea where that page went. My paladin used to have +2 to my hunter, always, (original class mounts) but now they are the same on the mounts tab (444) and the achieve (389) I have no idea if my hunter has somehow gained credit for the pally class mounts or if they no longer count

The blues really try their best to just ignore the player base, apparently.
It’s beyond frustrating that we get a hint of progress toward accurate counters, then they take it away and convolute the living crap out of it. It seriously feels like they are trying to make achievements as confusing as possible.
What gets me the most here, is that the achievement explicitly states “usable by one character”… Yet… Cross-faction mounts count… class-specific mounts count for other classes… and profession- specific mounts also count. This achievement quite literally works complete opposite of how one would be led to believe it works. Seems like a simple rewording of the achievement in-game would fix a lot of pain and confusion here.
