Is there any info/discussion on this? Best placement of the big UI elements like action bars/uf’s/cast bars/damage meters etc. to get the optimal min/max experience?
It’s all personal. For the most part those of us doing end game like to have our stuff setup towards the middle of our screen but not blocking things so we can keep an eye on our health etc. and our targets.

Optimal placement is subjective to the player and what sort of information they desire/require. Might I suggest taking a look at a couple of websites like WoWInterface, Vranx, TukUI just to name a few and see what people are doing.
What Elvenbane states is true however, if you’re raiding, it’s a good idea to keep things in the middle like UF’s, cooldowns, Auras, etc. but in such a way that doesn’t block your FOV of the floor so you aren’t standing in fire.
