Hey fellow PVE rogues. Out of curiosity, what spec do y’all think is most fun to play? I’m torn between sub and outlaw. Sin is cool, but the regen is just soooooo slooooow.
I love zipping around with grappling hook, and the pistol animations are so fun. I don’t mind RtB even, I think the concept is great even if a bad string of rolls is annoying. Plus not for nothin but I’m a goblin so it’s hard to imagine this little dork with his joisey accent as a, like, stealthy patient ninja so outlaw kinda just fits better. On the other hand, sub has a lot going for it. The shadowstrike teleport is a blast and killing mobs while questing in, like, seconds flat is a real boon for sub. And the self-healing is amazing. I blow through low levels of Torghast as sub, but I get my butt handed to me on outlaw.
Just wondering your thoughts. I do comparable longer-fight DPS on either even though obv sub is more bursty, but I’m not super interested in doing high keys or anything over some casual raiding once I get better gear. So, like I said, what do y’all think is the most fun even if it’s not necessarily the “best?”
Definitely not Assassination, I’m in the process of switching over to outlaw. Not a huge fan of the play style but it brings more AOE, single target & utility.
“Fun” is too subjective for anyone else to answer that for you.

Sub has been the most fun to play. It’s just not relevant in Nathria, so if you plan on raiding unholy or feral would be a better choice right now. I’ve been enjoying it in keys though, so there’s that.
Yeah, I was bummed when I tried assassination for a few days. I took some time off after LK before coming back and making this character. Didn’t play a rogue then but back then I just kinda had it in my head that sin was THE spec to play.
Definitely Outlaw since ST and cleave are basically the same. Sub feels fine for ST but there’s really not a whole lot of pure ST content outside of a few bosses in raid. Having to do Sub aoe just makes me feel like an Arcane Mage. Ofc it’s all subjective but if it’s for all pve content def Outlaw.
Also w/r/t Torghast… Outlaw is super fun if you’re Kyrian and/or you have a tank friend to go with for some sweet Echoing Reprimand/Vanish builds. Sub can do these two things as well but restless blades cdr for vanish and then taking the power where you reduce vanish cd by 10s for every enemy you kill + stacking the power where vanish reduces your cds by 15s each is chefskiss. Also if you have Celerity and the Jack of All Trades power it will proc Vendetta and Shadowblades for their full duration.

Yeah, I totally agree. To be honest, I’ve been switching back and forth a lot between sub and outlaw and doing sin here and there, and that’s all fine and good. It only becomes an issue with, like, having to remember to swap conduits at the forge and stuff. Kinda would like to pick one and run with it, but on the other hand it’s actually cool to enjoy them all and swap based on my mood. I’ve never really experienced that on other toons, even other straight DPS classes usually just have one spec that I enjoy more.

This is a misconception, granted we still don’t have enough data to determine that, but the only melee you want to stack if you really intend on progressing on Mythic content is Unholy because it’s incredibly overtuned even after the 20% mastery nerf.
Rogues aren’t bad in raids, and are definitely very good in M+ still. I really like Subtlety, but I think the ST damage should be a bit higher in PvE than it currently is and Outlaw has been fun with Count the Odds conduit that helps offset a bit of the RNG bs we all have to deal with.
The only spec I wouldn’t recommend currently is Assassination because boy, they really need some help.

It seems you are not worried about actual progression on raids, and not looking to push high keys. Everyone can tell you that assassination is a gutted spec that is currently unplayable compared to sub / outlaw and every other dps spec out there. Now the next choice has to be completely up to you. Find which spec best fits your play style, and run with it.
A different class. This class is horrendously boring in PVE and will give you carpal tunnel spamming shadowstrikes and backstabs.

Yeah, high keys probably not. Def more interested in raiding, but most of all am interested in enjoying playing the character regardless of what content I’m up to. Of course not looking for anyone to make the choice for me, but just wondering what if anything people liked about their favorite spec beyond, like, “it does the most damage rn.”
I like assassin even with the bad boring talent choices. Idk if that’s a testament to how much I like assassin or how much I dislike playing the others. Since their reinvention in legion class design overhaul I like the other 2 less than before. I use to be torn between Combat and assassination but always opt for assassin in the end.
I am someone who definitely chooses fun over optimal I play assassin rain or shine.

I’m enjoying Outlaw. Feels good to be swinging something instead of stabbing it. At this point I’m melting most mobs pretty easily so Outlaw really feels like its coming into its own. I do miss Sin though. Played all of BFA and just doesnt feel “good” like it used to. Probably a damage issue, but still. Something off. Sub is fun, but its all shadowdance all the time. Gets repetitive although the damage is fun.
So for now I’ll stick with Outlaw until I find a good Sin leggie and maybe give the old lady a ride.

I like sub and outlaw with outlaw pulling ahead. It’s really fast paced which is a playstyle I enjoy. I also play fury warrior which is great fun too. Sub is awesome out in the world doing wqs etc. It makes life a lot faster, while in dungeons outlaw just pulls ahead for me with its speed and cleave.
I’m a little selfish running hit and run over acrobatic strikes I’ll admit but, with the run speed increase and grappling hook to boot, I zip around the dungeon quickly and it’s fun as hell.

My way to keep them all fun is simply to rotate between them , but on a big scale .
I was outlaw for 8.3 till SL
Now subtlety till 9.X
Will probably go Sin at 9.X
To go back to outlaw before or after shadowlands ends .
In the end fun is up to you .

That’s a real good idea, playing one for a patch or more but switching to keep it fresh!

Assassination is closest to the original Rogue design. Sub and Outlaw are inching their way back to that but have a long way to go IMO.
