Herod is biggest in NA according to warcraft logs last i looked.
Whitemane was second i think if memory serves

PvP servers are 90% raidloggers. All the levelers and people doing dungeons are on PvE servers.
I did some surveys last night and Pagle alliance had about 50% more players online at 4 AM than any other server I checked, and they had 26k auctions.
Currently Pagle alliance has 28k auctions. Herod alliance is at 15k. Incendius is at 20k. And Heartseeker is at 21k.

Cannot say i enjoy the folks of Herod much.
But if active people is what you desire, then it’s a safe bet.

Just make sure you do your research. Some of the “Active” servers are just that way because its filled with YouTube groupies.
YouTubers and their minions can be a plague upon a server.

Skeram has highest active horde population but a dying alliance population so its more or less a PvE server. Grobbulus and Incendius are the closest major servers to being balanced but both still have a moderate horde advantage.
Pagle Ally side. Super active at all levels all times really
Ashkandi pretty active Horde side but it’s not the biggest
Incendius is the largest among the balanced servers regarding faction balnce.

Most elite top end raiding guilds both Alliance and Horde are on Herod with a minor exception or two.
Active leveling Alliance also on Herod… I ran two Mara’s back to back.
Active wpvp also on Herod. I experienced a Kazzak kill and witnessed dedicated Alliance wpvp guilds in action wiping out the Horde and Stealing the kill personally and that was epic.
You can do absolutely anything as Alliance and not feel sorry or ashamed for a second. There’s no better server.
Faerlina. But don’t take my word for it, the best is to roll some characters, and check out /world, and /LookingForGroup on the servers you are interested in during the times you are interested in playing.
I might agree that Herod would be the second best server after Faerlina. Maybe… but not really. Herod isn’t really any more named than any of the other servers, but Faerlina is a name brand server.
EDIT:
Herod isn’t famous for anything. Heartseeker is famous for being Alliance dominant. Heartseeker Alliance are looked down upon.
Stalagg is famous for being Horde dominant. Stalagg Alliance are looked up to.
I think Incendius or Grobb are the places to be if you want even balance.

Don’t be fooled. Those are tipping dangerously into Alliance dominated territory.
Herod has a more active raiding community. To this day the server still gets ques on raid days. Haven’t seen Faerlina with a que lately.
Faerlina once known as the steamer server does have alot of multi boxers.
