MoP or WoD Shadow Priest

Here’s a thought I want all your opinions on…MoP or WoD Shadow Priest.

I am personally a HUGE fan of WoD SP but will settle for either. I am a big PvP’er and rarely if not ever participate in any PvE content. I just want to be able to hold my own against DKs, Warrs, Ret, Monks, Healers (Yeah resto shamen back to back 120k not to mention Preservation Inner Flame or something that crits 100k on me).

Blizzard if you’re reading this, I will drop 2 years worth of sub if you design SP talent tree as it was back in MoP or WoD.

I enjoyed MoP spriest more than WoD. I did, however, like that WoD brought us different playstyles.

If memory serves I preferred WoD. For one main reason.

The cadence felt GOOD. Dot weaving, and the shadow orb system was nice.

It could be rose tinted glasses, but I remember WoD shadow as having a set and solid rotation and identity.

WoD felt fine but would be damn near unplayable in modern PvE scenarios, especially without 4 hunters chaining aspect of the fox on every raid encounter.

Also neither of them had anything even resembling functional dungeon gameplay.

I miss the BC days of being everyone’s favorite Support DPS. Enough DPS to hang out with the big guns during raids, mana battery, and enough off heals to make the others thankful I’m there. It was a hella fun time to be a SP and everyone wanted my sexy sexy body.

When they took all of that away from Shadow and turned them into a DPS spec meant to pump out damage using flashy CD’s I honestly quit the game. Didn’t come back until the end of Shadowlands.

^^^ Agreed. That style is actually the reason I originally picked up priest. I loved the idea of providing a key tool utility for the team. I understand why they did away with it, but it was a really cool time for Shadow.

There currently are only FOUR WoD talents missing from the (shadow) priest tree: Void Entropy, Clarity of Power, Cascade and Spectral Guise.

Imo the biggest issue of the current shadow priest tree is bringing back very old stuff like the cataclysm setboni, without even trying to modernize it.

Trying not to be rude to OP, but there really should be a meme for “Hi, I really want Shadow back to the glory days of MOP/WOD/CATA, which would never be competitive in today’s M+ environment. Please use that as a base design for all current content as Shadow. Also, I’m really into PVP.”

Clarity of Power + Cascade + Spectral Guise were great abilities. Lot of county play with Spectral Guise and dodging very important abilities. Having DP be the main source of damage and self healing when combined with shadow orbs allows for counter play potential against melee cleaves that just smash their keyboard in your face. Interesting to see if Blizzard can or willing to incorporate MoP/WoD design into it’s new talent tree system. (Especially since MoP was peak PvP)

It’s crazy how often Shadow Priest keeps changing.

BFA had the energy bar system where your goal was to keep it up 100% with silly amounts of corruption. For M+ it was the simplest build all you had to do was tab dot everything and your ghosts were your cleave.

In Shadowlands you could only do damage every 2 minutes because you had to sit on all your cds until PI reset. Probably the worst time for this spec in terms of AOE damage.

In Dragonflight it slaps for M+, but does bad raid boss damage when it used to be one of the the best in Shadowlands.

The sad thing is that no matter how good its damage is in M+ it’ll always be third, fourth, or fifth fiddle simply because of its massive disadvantages in M+ (horrendous kick, bad mobility, bad CC) that classes doing comparable damage don’t struggle from. Shadow, and priest in general, really is held to a separate standard for what they’re allowed to have in M+.
