Monster Mode

About twenty years ago, I sent Sony (may have still been Verant at the time) an email requesting a new feature to add to EverQuest. Well, I’m not sure if it was because of my email, or if it was a coincidence and some employee came up with it as well, but they implemented that very change. It was “Monster Mode.” I was all excited after they added it, and bummed out when they disabled it forever later that same day.

What was this “monster mode” feature? Well, when you got to the character select screen, you could click on the “monster” button. This would log you in to a random zone as a random mob. Though I remember playing multiple monsters that day, I specifically remember playing a basilisk in Lavastorm Mountains.

Soon after the feature was disabled, I ceased my denial that the removal was a bad thing, after reflecting on how I was playing that basilisk in Lavastorm. Basilisks in EQ can stun. Well, as a basilisk, I sought out some players playing their normal characters. I found a two-person team of an Enchanter and Magician. I attacked…stunned… ran away. That test was easy. When I went back, they were fighting something…and just like any wandering mob, I joined in on the fight. I ended up wiping their group because I was smarter and not predictable like a typical monster that has no real strategy. It was a griefer feature, thus it was removed. People were causing havoc all over the place.

Question: Do you think something like this could add some flavor to this game, or do you think it would be a grief feature where players could harass others? Would you enjoy being some random Orc in some random zone, able to sneak from behind a rock to attack someone picking herbs?

You would be one shot. Constantly.

Reconsider.

God i would love that idea! But as you said, it is quite a griefing way.

Perhaps if there was some restrictions toti. (like you can only go up to 40-60 yards from the point you got attacked, so if you see a player attacking you, well your waypoint is set, and fiyou run further than 60 yards (the player running away to avoid you) well, your character will automaticly return to the way point.

I don’t think this has it place in WM OFF , but i can see this happening in WM ON.

You know, as a priest myself, i loved to take control of NPC and what not, it felt like a new form of immersion… an immersion inside an immersion game(to a certain degree)… quite complicated eh?

Actually i posted this same idea on the EQ forums long long ago and you either took my idea or “coincidentally” thought of the same one.

I could care less if i die right away, it’s quite a nice different immersion from the standard gameplay that you have.

What if this apply to elite mobs … or perhaps even World Boss(very low chance of occuring)! That would be epic!

Maybe you stole my idea. Maybe it wasn’t as obscure an idea as I thought at the time.

I like this idea, sounds fun and I like it could be a little dangerous and to anyone trying to diss this idea it’s not like there’s any monster that’s strong enough to wipe out a town or city.

It would be interesting if you spawned as a Rare.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t think it would be very fun to get perma-stunned and taunted for 30 seconds until you die, lol

I think the idea is interesting and has potential to be fun.

I can also it see it being abused to no end, like how high level hunters used to trick lowbies into attacking their low level pets in order to flag them.

They have this. It’s called Warmode.

I could get behind this if it were its own phase like War Mode is tbh.

It should be incorporated into war mode, war mode on it’s own is already kind of really state I’d rather them add a sandbox feature like this to warmode.

Most definitely can be abused so it should be a sign up feature like warmode.

I believe we have that… I was transformed into a crab where I dodged players fire and killed turtles.
