Monk Race for SL

All, I’m planning on main-ing a go for SL.

I am going to be playing Alliance and doing both PvE and PvP … I won’t be breaking into 2200+ rating nor will I be running anything higher than M15.

I would like to select a race that has some good PvP utility but I would prefer not a Human.

For PvP I will mostly be playing WW and PvE will be split between BM/WW with a touch of MW. I’m not looking for the best race that “tops the meters”, I’m looking for a race that brings good utility to monks in PvP (and of lesser importance PvE).

What would you suggest?

I don’t want to limit the discussion but I am currently thinking:

KT

  • Great Brewmaster racial in Brush it Off

  • 1% versatility is great for all spec’s

  • Nice PvP talent (situational) in Haymaker

VE

  • The 5% dmg over 12 sec on a 60 sec proc is really nice but will likely work out to less than 1% versatility without 100% uptime or some clever timing (i.e. using hardest hitters during proc)

  • The avoid pushback is obviously nice as a MW but it is also great as a BM (and to a lesser extent WW) for avoiding pushback on Chi Burst (imho Chi Burst is unusable as a non VE BM)

  • The port is situational (arguably more than Haymaker) but I can see it being powerful in PvP as MW … perhaps slightly less so as WW.

I switched to void elf when I switched to Alliance and the teleport thing is just annoying. I’m sure with some getting use to it can have some uses in PvP but it’s also not a huge distance either way.

Haven’t really noticed the push back thing. I actually didn’t realize we had it, :joy:

Kul’Tiran is actually all around awesome though. If you like one you should definitely play one. There’s really nothing fun/functional that VE brings other than cool hair, cool heritage armor, unlike KT where you’ll actually put Haymaker on your bars and use it.

I guess it depends on aesthetics really. I always liked Humans so I did that. But what I also like about humans is the 2% addition to all secondary stats which is pretty strong also. I guess it evens out if you pick void elf with their damage boost? Anyways the differences aren’t big enough to be so strong so just pick what is good aesthetically is what I would tell players.

Your best bet is probably either dwarf if you don’t want human. Gnome and KT aren’t bad, either.

Honestly, it doesn’t matter if you’re not doing more than 15s (I can’t speak for pvp because I rarely do any pvp). I would suggest whatever you prefer for aesthetic at this point.

If you are not going for top rating in PvP and PvE then i would suggest playing the race you like the most. I was Maghar then switched to Orc for the 20% stun resistance, hated the Orc green skin tones and switched back to Maghar. I won’t make that mistake again.

Thanks all for the responses. Ultimately, I agree with you … any selection will be able to accomplish what I want. Perhaps I just fear the “buyers remorse” since I plan to main Monk

  • KT seems strong
  • Dwarf/DI seems strong
  • Human is always strong w/ EMFH + 2% secondary stats which will likely work out to equal or better than 1% versatility now and certainly by the end of SL.
  • Gnome seems ok but Monks generally have mobility it spades so more mobility doesn’t seem like it is necessary (perhaps escape artist helps you use Tiger Lust on teammates instead of yourself)
  • NE seem strong if you have a higher skill w/ SM than I do (I don’t have this amount of skill so it would be wasted on me)
  • Panderan is not my cup of tea … because I am too lazy/cheap to cook so I will never (ok rarely) take advantage of their stat buff
  • VE seems ok, cast push back avoidance is nice and it is the a “bursty” (less so than Dwarf/DI) racial

My indecision is getting the best of me but I appreciate everyone weighing in!

Well in that case: if you are primarily tanking, KT is the superior race for defense. If you are wanting to dps or heal, human is your best choice.

Be a KT, customize him to look like Chris Farley and BAM. You got Beverly hills ninja.

Best ally tank race is DI Dwarf imo.

I’d have to second this. My 2 alliance rooms are both Dwarf and Dark Iron :slight_smile: DI is extremely strong and their racial has a lot of potential in PvP

DI Mole Machine racial gets slept on too. It’s extremely useful.

A little alpaca told me that Vulpera are the best monk race.

Sincere thank you to everyone for posting, really nice to get feedback from the community. I love Monks and I really appreciate everyone weighing in.

So I leveled the following:

KT

Dwarf

VE

I also bought some tokens with gold so I can re-customize any of them.

  • One could say my indecision is crippling … I’m considering seeing a therapist :wink:

I still think Dark Iron’s are extremely strong but I have the following issues with them

  1. I love the male models BUT I hate the run animation so bad … looks awful to me
  2. The females models are fine but I hate the voices/sounds they make

Gnome.

I literally could not live without escape artist. It’s a 1 minute cool down and frees up a talent so you dont have to sacrifice chi torpedo, which is 1000% better then roll.

With escape artist and the range/speed boost from chi torpedo, no marksman hunter or mage stands a chance against me. Or any class which is great at kiting really.

Extra haste, energy and mana is very nice as well.

I feel gnome is super underrated and possibly better then human.

Although I love Orcs, I prefer to have each of my characters be a different race, my warrior is an orc. I’m going blood elf

I love their lore, they look great, their racials are nice. And I’ve got a great head cannon backstory for myself. I’m hyped for shadowlands. I can’t wait to dive in, tend to my spirit garden, and kick butt.
