Hey all!
I’m leveling up my rogue currently and am having a great time. I struggled between choosing monk or rogue. I do enjoy both. Am looking for opinions on what it is like to play each class at 120… I am more of a causal player, random BGs, LFR, low level mythics, etc.
One thing I notice is lack of AOE early on with rogue. I got spoiled with FoF on monk at 20. How does AOE look later on with rogue? Is it as satisfying? I’m currently playing sin but am open to outlaw as well.
Any thoughts in general on the above?
Im not 100% sure on Monks but i know they are viable in all content at 120 just like rogues are.
For rogue assassination is the best ST melee dps in the game depending on gear. It excells in pvp and M+ as well due to its bleeds being veey good on cleave fights and small AoE. It falls off s bit on mass aoe however.
Outlaw is one of the BEST mass aoe classes in the game alongside DH. It isnt quite as viable on ST fights or Arena but very fun in pvp regardless and still competative.
I am biased and would choose rogue but monks are still pretty cool especially being able to use karma as a dps cd on some boss fights.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply! Great to hear for sure… and stealth is hard to pass up too. Haven’t played much with outlaw yet as I am lower level but am open to trying it!
Outlaw is a lot better this xpack plus having deadshot traits and ace up yuour sleeve give you massive BTE and Pistol shot crits. Heaps of fun

from a purely pvp perspective ww is currently better than rogue, but ww consistently goes from being good to trash tier while rogue is consistently in the meta with at least one spec almost always
rogue is also very good for bgs because you can pick your fights, and ninja capping can be one of the most fun aspects of the game

I have played both rogue and monk very casually this expac, but from my experience, rn monk is a great all around spec from mythic plus to arena to bgs and world pvp, monk provides great on demand burst, high sustain, great mobility and amazing defensive cds

I just recently rolled another monk after twinking one at 119 for awhile.
I never intended to play WW outside of leveling. I rolled it solely to heal but guess what happened.
I fell in love with it.
WW monk plays the way Rogues used to play. High mobility and good burst damage plus you can heal+rez…
Depends on what you want… Assassination is way more consistent than outlaw but you need pretty specific azerite pieces to be viable in M+. The issue I have with outlaw is if you don’t get sinister strike procs say goodbye to all your damage and being energy starved because making use of deadshot means that you need procs. It’s a 30% chance and yet I consistently manage to have 10+ cast streaks of it not even procing in M+. Then on top of that you have to spam RTB most of the time too. You basically have zero control over your single target DPS
Monk is very good right now and the new traits put their energy regen at 7.3 levels essentially. Chiji proc for crane kick gives you a free cast + energy regen since you’re channeling, Glory giving 25% chance to refund chi on RSK, Fury giving you a stupid amount of haste for huge energy regen. You practically have unlimited energy and can just spam abilities. A lot of your damage is put into Storm Earth and Fire though. The biggest issue though is you’re not a rogue or a dh so people are just going to pass you up for one of those instead.
Either way, if you’re not doing high end content it really doesn’t matter what you play at all. I’ll say that playing monk is way more fun than playing outlaw though that’s for sure.
I feel uniquely qualified to answer because these are the only two classes I’ve ever played. Started this rogue on release day, raided through TBC, quit and came back for BFA, and rolled a WW because I couldn’t recall how to play my level 70 rogue.
I did the WW through season 1. I really enjoyed it. I got the ol’ rogue in shape for season 2 because I do a lot of Mythic+ pugging and rogues are generally more desirable for groups.
I think what I appreciated and miss most about WW as a current rogue is that WW is less spammy. Because of the way its mastery works, you don’t want to use the same ability twice in a row, and it really feels better to play, IMO. There are a lot of situations as a WW where you’ll have to change what ability you were going to use on the fly because you want to keep mastery going. I miss that. On the rogue, it’s the same rotation, pretty much all the time. At least as outlaw.
Some things I much prefer about rogue? (speaking as outlaw only, because I haven’t dabbled a lot with the other specs) – the very first thing I loved over WW was dealing with explosives. For WW monk, fists of fury is a huge source of damage, and it’s a channeling ability, so if you switch targets, or move while it’s active, you’re losing damage. Outlaw is so spammy and cleavey it’s very easy to switch targets quickly without losing any damage.
If your concern is getting into Mythic+ pugs, rogue is the way to go. It was more difficult to get groups as a WW, because I didn’t offer as much utility as a rogue. Damage is pretty comparable IMO. I held my own with the rogues as a WW, and the WWs hold their own with me now.
For overall funness to play? I give the edge to WW. It also has the added utility of being able to tank or heal if that’s your thing. It wasn’t mine, so I felt I’d be better served with a three DPS spec class. I ended up with rogue mostly for nostalgia reasons, this being my first character and all. But I do miss that monk. It was way less spammy and I didn’t get pain in my hand or fingers from that as much as I do with the rogue. On the other hand, it’s nice to get invited to 9 out of the 10 Mythic+ PUGs I apply for.

You have explained my exact conundrum. I love the monk play style, but I love my legacy as a rogue, and enjoying the experience and history of it. The flavor of rogue is way cooler than the monk.

Fun moments as a rogue. I was smashing my mouse around so hard it gave me rogue pinky while I was leveling

I feel committed to rogue because it has been my class since vanilla and have a hard time walking away from all my character has accomplished.
If I could do it all over again though, I would have mained a class that could tank or heal (or both!). The few times I have leveled an alt to max level that could do those things, it was really nice feeling like a valued member of the team rather than just a damage bot. It seems like good healers can really carry teams in pve content.
I Don’t like how underpowered low level rogues are, like,I do really like rogues, but still, blizzard really needs to buff rogue.
Rogue for sure. One thing that is always a solid guarantee is the fact that rogues have always had and always will have at least 1 spec in the top-tier. Rogues will never be a sub-optimal choice. Monk? You might be doing good 1 patch and sucking the next.
