Monk or Paladin?

My co-worker asked me which they should play. I have little to no experience with these classes so I came here!

They are looking for melee dps with the option to heal. No tanking. They pvp often and like running dungeons, not much of a raider.

Thanks!

Monk IMHO…

They also wanted me to ask how each one is at soloing pve?

I always see Paladin as the “safe” option. Easy to learn, easy to survive.

Monk on the other hand has a much higher skill cap, an involved rotation, and lots of mobility.

I prefer Monk myself, though I really enjoy the aesthetics, lore, music, transmogs, and related characters.

Paladin has a smooth rotation with decent ST/MT with damage focused around wings.

Monks has a lot more consistent and High MT damage but struggles a little with meeting the same DPS checks in ST.

Both Paladin and Monk are good in PvP, Monk is stronger in it than Paladin for DPS and both are complete machines at being PvP healers.

Lastly Monk is a bit more challenging as a class (you’d need to master combo point usage - can get addons or weakauras to help).

I personally preferred Windwalker over Retribution because of the quicker game play. As such, I found Ret easier to play, but in the end, I still preferred WW.

It’s really hard to kill a paladin. They have so many buttons that immediately save them.

I can’t comment on healing. I’m more tank and DPS on my paladin and monk, but if I had to choose between them for DPS I’d go with monk.

Some people really hate the monk rotation with its never use the same ability twice in a row, but if you get it down it’s fun and rewarding. Plus, monk has a lot of fun tricks and utility and mobility.

That said, both are fun for DPS.

the one that you enjoy the most

Thanks, this person is relatively new. Has only been playing for about a year and only played casters.

Good to know, thank you.

I’m thinking easier would be better.

Monk.
As much as Id like Pally. I wouldnt touch ret.

Monks biggest DPS component is cooldown based (touch of death) and their hardest hitting rotational ability is a channelized spell. Windwalker is also a rotation with no procs. Visually, monks use their weapons infrequently. Some people love that, some will prefer Ret.

Monk are more of a pvp class for sure, specially as DPS. Of course any class can be OP at times but monk’s play-style and utility is very geared towards pvp.

I suggest looking at one more class that can do these things, don’t forget about the shaman class my fellow gamer!

I mean given that according to their guidelines of being a melee that can heal that would mean Enhancement Shaman and it’s not the greatest at the moment.

(But hey I haven’t played one at 120 maybe I’m wrong).

Based on what they are looking to do, I would go WW.

It is on the more fragile side atm but i still see folks who know their class do well, and an extra ranged dps option is a wonderful thing.

Depends on your co-worker. Paladins are Holy Knights with flashy pretty spells and playe armor. While Monks are like Kung Fu Shaolin masters. They wear leather and are less flashy.

Monks have a “faster” paced combat and are more mobile. Paladins are slower but they have lots of bubbles, immunity, cleanses.

Monk for sure!!

Paladin hands down. Super easy to play, I quest as Prot and there isn’t much I can’t solo, when you gear up enough you can solo Mythics Dungeons without too much issue. Ret is also pretty tanky and can solo much of everything also.

Holy Pally is a super strong healer, we got the goods and it’s a cool heal spec, so we are currently all around in a good spot right now.

Leveling as Prot is fun, you can load up on mobs, pull the entire quest area and just grind them all down.

We have a huge tool kit, including many “oh crap” tools like our Bubble.

I love my Monk too but you can pick up a Pally and go get it almost immediately they are that easy to learn.
