Monk or mage?

Hello all, i decided that i want to give bfa another try with this alt, and i want to know what is a better race between mage and monk.

Depends:

  • what you actually want to do in WoW
  • who’s playing it
  • what you enjoy

I’ve seen awesome players play ā€œaverageā€ classes and melt faces. I’ve seen terrible players play OP classes and suck badly.

There really is no correct answer.

This. Also you didn’t mention what faction or does it matter?

try both of them fun class’s to play with

Mage for sure.

I’ve looked in my crystal ball and it is saying for you to play Mage.

Racial sims put Void Elf pretty high on the charts for Alliance for all specs, however race does change depending on spec for Horde.

I also largely agree with Ltque. Although there is a difference in DPS between races and classes playstyle and skill makes the biggest difference.

Had a Retribution Paladin in my Mechagon run today absolutely destroy the dungeon, like there was no way even the other DH could catch up to his DPS.

(Admittedly they were like 449 ilvl or something ridiculously high).

So I recommend going for something you love and want to become awesome at rather than ā€˜is good in dps charts’.

Warrior and DK are my two mains but i strongly believe monk is the best class in the game.

If you have a pretty good knowledge of the game and mechanics…roll the Monk. Not much harder to play than any other class but not something you can max your potential on if you don’t have a certain amount of know how.
However…Mage is always fun and can be a great dps all around. In the end…it just depends on you.

Do you prefer melee and the option to tank or heal sometime down the road? Go monk.

Or do you prefer pure ranged DPS with 3 specs to choose from? Go mage.

If you’re not sure of your playstyle you should try em both out as others have suggested

When I played a mage, this thought occurred to me: No matter what class you play, sooner or later you’ll be fighting multiple mobs. Do I want to be in a good place for doing that, or not?

Blasting mobs from afar before they reach you is great, and I love Frost Mage animations. But mobs get tougher, and cloth armor and kiting wasn’t my style, so I went monk.

My main here is a monk, obviously, but I also have a 120 human fire mage. I struggled with low level mage powers and appearance, so it took me awhile to enjoy it until I got to mid/high levels.
I’ve loved playing a monk since MoP and have two more I’m leveling, a 111 KT and a 55 Zandalari troll, and having fun with both of them as well.

Maybe do trial runs with both and see what you think?

One thing about monks is that their dps is based largely around using cooldowns at the right time. If you want a more rotation based dps class monk probably isn’t for you.

The answer is mage.

Arcane mage is a blast, but if I have those two as choices, id go with monk for more versatility since it can tank and heal as well.

mage is always in a good spot and you have 3 specs that are fun,.

What are you intending on doing? I’m assuming dps since mage is on the table. Are you going to be raiding? Doing m+?

At any rate, mage dps is significantly stronger than monk’s in practically every situation. As a matter of fact, monk dps is generally brought more for the +5% to physical damage that they provide more than anything else. They are getting some buffs in 8.3 though!

That being said, which do you like better thematically? I personally prefer mage and would steer you towards that, but would you like to punch things in the face or blow them up with magic from a distance?

And obviously if there is any chance you’d like to tank or heal, go monk. Although… frost mages make very good tanks so long as you can chill the things you’re fighting.

Play what you enjoy more.

I recommend Mage if you’re looking for a DPS class. It has always been a fun class and the specs have nice clear identities that are all fun in their own way (Fire is my favorite). Portals are also darn convenient for pretty much any travel and free food/water is still a nice bonus.

However, if you’re wanting the ability to do other roles like Healing and Tanking, then Monk is the obvious choice. The class is fun, but can risk going OOM (Mistweaver), be clunky in rotation (Brewmaster), or full of buttons and CDs (Windwalker). I’m generally bad at using highly mobile classes (I’m looking at you too Demonhunters!). I think Paladins and Druids are more fun hybrid classes.

I’ve leveled several Mages to max level, but have yet to level one Monk to max. That should tell you enough about my preferences.

If you want to strictly dps and have fun, Mage is fun and has lots of options. Monk is fun also, and you’ll survive open world better. But Monk is melee. I’d say Mage, but that is because I favor ranged and casters.
