This week I finished getting my normal Mystic Heron’s Discipline set for my monk alt. I do like the set. But man, monks are really over-catered for when it comes to bird themed armor. We already had the Vestments of the Red Crane back in MoP. We then had Chi-Ji’s Battlegear in Legion. And now the latest one. They tried to pull a fast one by naming it after a heron, but we’re not fooled! Cranes and herons are basically the same!
I hope they ease up on the bird sets for a while. Maybe give some love to the other Celestials. There was also Xuen’s Battlegear back in Legion, and the Grievous/Prideful glad sets in MoP did have that glowing Yu’lon effigy appear occasionally. Those are cool, but more would be nice. What would especially be nice though is something themed around Niuzao. It’s weird that after all these years we’ve not had one, considering he’s the main guy for brewmaster monks. It would be awesome to get a Black Ox Battlegear.
Also, fun trivia time. Because while writing this I googled oxen to get some ideas of what some armor set could look like. Did you know that oxen aren’t actually their own species?! I didn’t! Apparently it’s a castrated male bovine that is over four years old. Most often cattle, but sometimes other bovine species. Mind blown! This is like when I found out that Panther isn’t a specific species.
UPDATE:
We did it!

Unfortunately, monk sets are just bad in general and pretty much always have been with only a few exceptions. And, much like WW’s poor stat scaling, I don’t see them fixing it anytime soon.
It’s like they have no idea what monks should look like past the initial robe sets that we got, so they’ve just been sticking random balls and celestials on armor and calling it good.

I was just thinking about this with the advent of our new Hero talents coming out.
We have crane mogs, cloud serpent/dragon mogs, tiger mogs, we need a big strong ox mog now.

I’ve always found them to be a comfortable medium. Not too many that I flat out didn’t like, and a few that I love. Mostly just pretty neat.
Also hey! You race changed! Giving up the cyborg life?
Blizz won’t let mechagnomes wear the long coat mogs and since they seem to be releasing them more frequently I gave up.
I love my mechagnome but they miss out on so much stuff mogs wise.

For real? I know they have the leg thing, but the coat is part of the chest armor, isn’t it? That would have looked cool as hell over the robolegs.
The lower part of the coat on the Night Warden armor set and now the Pirate Captains set are part of the pants…so mechagnomes get a diaper instead.
Even the short skirt from the Trading Post’s February Valentines outfit turned into a diaper…which makes no sense since we can wear longer robes

As far as I know, the coat is part of the chest armor on humans (and maybe Kul Tirans) only, and no one else. Everyone else, it’s chopped in half and the lower part of the coat is part of the pants. Edit: No, it’s just humans.
Which I hate. But I still love that set. But BOOOO, why?
On the other hand, you can play Monk as an Ox-man (AKA Tauren), but you can’t play any sort of bird person, so things balance themselves out.

As I was writing it I also kept thinking to myself that maybe it was to make up for Chi-Ji not getting one of those statue talents named after him. Or because he is just kind of the secondary celestial in all the specs.

I wondered why we are leaning so Chi-Ji too.
Especially for Mistweaver and our spell effect colors. shrugs
EDIT: Also, I feel like the art department is not utilizing the male Pandaren model when designing armors at all. I have no proof but my goodness sometimes they look outright hideous on my character.
I would hope they’d design around the iconic race/class combo.

All you need to know is “YES, YES, YES, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, YES! PEPPERS!”

I wish they’d do more armor lets like season 1. They looked unique and fit the theme of the raid tier. After that it was back to the usual class armor designs.
They could definitely do better for pandaren. They made them such an awkward shape but they could work with it. The way Arthur Lorenz/Handclaw did his concept art versions of pandaren armor fits their body so well.

Actually he did one set that is exactly what I would love to see for monks! He did it for pandaren warriors, but still. Give me this!

Ok now give all your future bird sets to shamans.
For reasons.
