Monk Archetype is broken

So currently there are 0 weapons animations for monks whatsoever. Weapons are nothing but eyesore inconsistent with character identity. Ive complained about this on forums before and people response is that `Monks don’t use weapons, they use hand to hand combat.

If this is the case then why does Storm, Earth, and Fire monk ability summon elementals that have preset maces and swords equipped and they use these weapons in their auto attack animations.

It makes no sense Blizzard/Ian to explicitly refuse to give monks weapons animations but gives them the ability to make spirit clones that use preset weapons? This is honestly the dumbest thing in WOW I have ever experienced (or cared about, at least).

Some people still consider this game an RPG.
Its hard for me to even blame Blizzard when half the level 60 monks are so dense they don’t even realize their character has never even picked up their weapon.

Please someone besides me get mad about this.
Give monks Glyph of Jab,
Make fist weapons required weapon and visible in attack animations, or
Remove weapons animations from Storm, Earth Fire

Monks were not created with the idea that they would be a class that uses only hand to hand combat. This is a post MoP concept. Quite a few NPCs in MoP that were considered to be monk archetypes regularly used weapons. Monks use mostly hand to hand combat, but they also use weapons as they are capable of using whatever is available to them in their environment.

I guess I just don’t understand why they went this direction and acted like it was supposed to be this way all along and anyone who thinks otherwise doesn’t understand the monk identity.,

I, uh, don’t think it’s that serious.

kinda agree here
I’m fine with having two cosmetics on my back

All 12 Monks currently playing the game agree.

Is this a joke?

When monks were announced, one of the bullet points was that they’d have unique weapon animations, that they weren’t JUST hand to hand fighters. And in the past, they have had unique animations, like blackout strike, which was recently taken away.

I absolutely want my monk’s weapons to show. I want my brewmaster to whack things with that staff of his. When my windwalker punches something, I want to see him wearing the big stone fists that were one of my artifact appearances. If he has swords equipped/mogged, turn his punch attacks into a fancy wuxia-style blade twirl attack instead.

And yes, for players who want that unarmed combat aesthetic, let them hide their weapons or give them a glyph.

I’m super tired of monk animations being turned into generic punches and kicks, when there is so much they could do if monks got back their unique weapon animations.

Here’s another one. Why Fists of Fury requires you to have one handed weapons to use fists of fury if your not gonna use that weapon?

It would be nice if 1/10 weapon strikes used a weapon animation.
it would be like the night elf flip, but hitting things.

I agree completely OP. So dumb having a stat stick hanging off my back.

Either give me animations or make me immune to disarm!

It would be really cool if our auto attacks would perform random MMA strikes to make it look like we’re really mixing it up. Flying knees, elbows, everything.

I completely agree. People that say “Hurr Monks should just punch things” clearly have never seen real life or fantasy (even Pandaren!) Monks before. Monks are masters of TONS of weapons. Swords, daggers, pole arms, staves, bows and arrows, throwing knives, etc. They train their bodies to be perfection, and they train their weapons to be extensions of their own body.

I love the fantasy of the Chi powered martial artist. I grew up playing games like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat. Being able to punch harder than a mace, swing your hand like a knife or take hits because your skin is tougher than iron is an awesome fantasy. But that doesn’t mean that weapons should be completely forsaken too though. That would be like if someone told Rogues that they could only wield daggers, because they are the ninja class. Or that warriors should only be able to use a sword and shield.

Variety is the spice of life, people.

Unique animations is pushing it… it was literally just tied to “jab” and consisted of a slash for every weapon that was exactly the same motion.

Monks had some things better when they first came out… like spinning fire blossom and chi burst being a spender so you can kamehameha all day lol. But animations still have been awful since they came out… =/

You have my sympathy, BUT…

Casters don’t have any weapon animations either.

Staffs just hang out on the back, other weapons just stay on the side.

So, it isn’t an issue exclusive to Monks.

We need to have monks have Avatar the last airbender attacks and such. =p That’s what really needs to happen. Though I guess shaman would be mad.

Nah. I enjoy my holding my staff like a BrewMaster while I punch and kick and heal the things.

If I wanted weapon animations, I would roll the 60million other class+spec combos that have weapon animation.

IMHO they should make Monks animations more flashy, like what Diablo 3 did with them. Yes I know D3 is usually picked on and derided by players, but you have to admit… Monks and Witch Doctors had some pretty neat ability animations.

The Monk should however stay a fists only spec. IMHO they should be able to completely conceal all of their weapons, regardless of spec or weapon type. I empathize that people want Blademaster, etc. But Monk isn’t Blademaster. I’m all for a discussion about a spec that does that however.

They are a fighter that uses their fist. Obviously they need weapons for a stat stick, but do they need it ‘visible’ if they wanted to hide it? I’d say no myself, but that’s just my fancy.

Whether or not monks use their weapons in combat really has no affect on my game play. I’d rather see Blizzard buff mistweaver damage output some.

It doesn’t require one handers any more FYI.

I’m OK with the current state of WW animations. All our skills are kicks and punches so it fits.

Apples to oranges. Monks are a melee class that don’t have any weapon animations. Furthermore, casters recieved a top to bottom animations overhaul in Legion. Monk was the only class that didn’t get one.

Monks have have more animations because various moves have a different animation.

Fists of Fury looks different from Blackout Kick, which looks different from Rising Sun Kick, which looks different from Whirling Dragon Punch, which looks different from Tiger Palm, which looks different from Spinning Crane Kick.

That’s SIX different animations, each associated with a specific move.

Casters have ONE animation that shows them throwing the spell and looks identical for every single one.

Not against Monks being improved, but casters have it much much worse. Heck, Hunters every move with a bow looks the same, while melee pretty much just swing the weapon each time, but it rarely looks different depending on the move.

So, from a certain perspective, monks have it best of all the classes!
