I’m thinking about buy a new monitor, and seem to have questions. I’m fine with 1080p, 60FPS. I am by all accounts a casual player. I raid on LFR and occasionally Normal. Yeah, I’m that guy. I don’t often play more than 2 hours at a time, as I don’t have the time. I’ll primarily be using the monitor for internet browsing, YouTube, spreadsheets, and WoW. That said, would anything over 60hz be an over kill? Also the age-old question, flat or curved? Currently on a flat. Thank you.
Ultimately you’ll need to try it out to know.
Flat VS curve
Hard to say. I have both and just slightly prefer the curve one cause I can see the edge of the screen better. Comes down to preference and how far you’re sitting back.
Refresh rate.
Yes even for simple day to day tasking i prefer having a higher refresh rate monitor. Everything feels smoother and Everytime I switch back to my work monitors it takes a bit to adjust. Everything just feels like it’s stuttering.
I’d also look into higher resolution and panel types.
One thing that you didn’t mention is the size of your monitor. 1080p on a 20" or 22" monitor is a lot different than 1080p on a 27" or larger monitor.
I actually used a 27" 1080P 120hz panel for a while, as well as a 32" 1440P 144Hz panel after that. Both were fairly low resolution relative to their size, resulting in a low DPI. It didn’t bother me while using those monitors. When I got my current 38" Ultrawide however, it’s 3840x1600 resolution is much higher relative to it’s size, and after getting used to the higher DPI, the old monitors are horrible to look at now.
Not at all. 120Hz+ is very noticeable on the desktop compared to 60Hz. Even basic things like moving the mouse cursor, scrolling web pages, etc, look so much smoother. Yes, it’s worth it.
I would say that the main variables to consider are the monitor technology used, the size of the monitor, and how far away you sit from your monitor.
The main reason for a curved monitor is because some/most monitor technologies have significant viewing-angle issues. You will get significant color-shift and other issues if you look at the panel at an angle as opposed to looking at it straight-on. Given that most people sit much closer to their monitors compared to something like a TV, above a certain size you get to the point where if the monitor isn’t curved, then you’re looking at the center of the monitor straight-on, but looking at the sides at a significant angle.
Preference is a huge factor here. Personally, I think that flat is fine for anything up to about 27" or so. Once you get to 32" or so, you should really start to consider curved unless you sit pretty far from your monitor. You should absolutely get a curved monitor if you get an ultra-wide monitor.
