Hi! Quick question. I recently updated my nVidia drivers etc. which includes their new RTX HDR feature. This got me around to calibrating my monitor and all that which got me to thinking…
Does Blizzard have any sort of “reference” images as to what they feel a scene should look like so I can compare with what I’m seeing in game on my machine? As a creative type myself, I would love it if what I’m seeing on my screen more or less matches the intent of the artists there on the WoW team as to how bright/dark/contrasty/etc. a location should look.
Not that I know of. They do release a ton of artwork and screenshots though as part of news articles and such. Those you would assume are “calibrated” to look they way they want. Esp the ones done for major announcements that would have had the art team involved. Maybe that could be something you can use?
Search for a screen calibration colour bar on your favourite search engine. That should be enough also make sure you get one with the blacks and greys also so you make sure you calibrate it properly. Windows has a colour calibration tool in appearance and personalisation / display try that
Based on how old the engine is, I’d assume they do everything under the hood in LDR space, so they probably calibrate around sRGB. If they’ve updated things and their production pipeline, they might use a wide gamut color space like DCI-P3 since they typically line up well with the color space on basic HDR displays and because it’s one of the most common consumer screen color spaces now.
At the end of the day, just adjust things to your liking. No two sets of eyes see the world the same anyways, since it’s all virtualized by the neural algorithms unique to each individual.
