Molten Core Changes

Can someone point out in the below changes to Molten Core that made it easy? I keep seeing players state we have a nerfed version of it and that’s why it was cleared by sub-60 players. I just need help identifying the changes that made this possible. Or is it time to move the goal posts yet again?

Patch 1.7.0 (13-Sep-2005):

  • Bind on Equip Bracers and Belts in Molten Core now drop more often.

Patch 1.6.0 (12-Jul-2005):

  • The loot tables in Molten Core have been revised slightly.

  • Characters that die and release in the Molten Core will now receive a minimap corpse marker and arrow that will lead them to the window next to Lothos Riftwaker in Blackrock Mountain.

(2005-06-07):

  • Additional new raid items have been added to the treasure lists for bosses in Molten Core.

Patch 1.4.0 (2005-05-05):

  • Molten Core boss creatures have all received some new items on their loot tables.

  • Most of the non-class set items that dropped from Molten Core have had their effective levels increased, resulting in higher DPS weapons, and/or better stats and effects.

  • The loot tables for some of the Molten Core bosses have been improved so they drop an additional epic item per kill.

  • Prior to this patch, Molten Core boss creatures could drop items from one of two different tiered sets for every character class. The loot tables have been changed so Molten Core bosses will now only drop items from the lower tier class sets. However, some of the items from those sets were not previously dropping in Molten Core. These missing class set items will now drop in Molten Core, allowing players to complete their lower tier class sets.

Patch 1.3.0 (07-Mar-2005):

  • Players who have completed the Molten Core discovery quest can now port directly to the zone, bypassing Blackrock Depths.

  • Fixed an issue that was causing the first Firelord to stop moving.

  • Line of Sight checks removed from many creature abilities in Molten Core.

Patch 1.2.0 (18-Dec-2004):

  • If you die in Molten Core, you will now be able to retrieve your corpse at the Blackrock Depths instance line.

“15 years of having the fights dissected, analyzed, memorized, and mastered.” didn’t make the patch notes.

Translated to “don’t have all of your melee get hit by the AoE Fire knockback on a 25 second timer every single time it goes off”.

Check patch notes for various class buffs, debuff slot limit increases, and various other things that dramatically increased player power baseline.

it’s not changes to MC itself so much as it is buffs to players themselves, but at the same time people are whining for no reason because even on an earlier patch these p server guilds still would’ve cleared MC already

It’s rich seeing level 30s go “HURR MC IS TOO EASY!!!” like they’ve got it on farm already

BWL is gonna be a rude awakening for a lot of these players (especially the apes that don’t know what threat is yet, have fun pulling threat on Vael!)

Don’t even get my started on AQ40 or Naxx, like trust me, even with 1.12 talents these raids aren’t going to be a pushover for free loot. IIRC the Naxx damage tuning in Vanilla was barely increased at all when Wrath was introduced, Anub’rekhan’s Locust Swarm hit for pretty much exactly the same against level 60s as it did against level 80s

Here’s what the wiki says about Locust Swarm damage:

Classic: Remaining in the radius of effect will cause a DoT debuff to stack repeatedly, dealing a large amount of damage, around 1200 damage/2sec per stack and silencing those afflicted.

Wrath 25man: Remaining in the radius of effect causes a DoT debuff of 1313 to 1687 nature damage every 2 seconds that stacks repeatedly, and which silences those afflicted.

1.12 talents made it easier. More so than any changes to the actual instance.

(note, I’m not saying easy mc=bad, just stating why it’s easy)

Regardless of whether or not the fight is tuned easier than it was back then, the main reason for all the backlash is that people still want to think you need a doctorate and the ability to split the atom to raid in classic wow. It’s not true, never was, never will be. People play with more than 10 FPS and less than 150 Ping now, they have more addons, more min maxing websites, etc. etc. For some reason it makes people feel superior to know that they are playing a game that is extremely difficult, regardless if they are the ones that are doing the difficult content.

That’s why I don’t get all of the QQ. Most of us aren’t even level 60, let alone ready to enter Molten Core. I’m for one still so excited to clear that place and kill all the bosses with my guild and friends, but I’m enjoying the leveling process too much to speed through it. A private server guild that has been practicing speed leveling and killing the boss for several years has no effect on mine, or 90% of the community’s game and fun.

I used to play Final Fantasy XI on private servers, and the “classic” servers for that game are exactly the same way. The people who were bottom-feeders back in the day now complain that the content is “too easy,” without realizing the depth of information everyone has available to them now is TREMENDOUS. Back in 2003 we barely had the ability to look up recipes for crafts, but in 2019 we can watch full videos of boss mechanics and prepare with a complete “how to play your job/class” guide on YouTube before even rolling a character.

There are lots of things that make Molten Core a bit easier than it used to be, but people definitely undervalue information and hardware in the equation. I remember trying to do MC on my PC back in the day and having to shut down literally all of my other non-mandatory processes on my PC to even get above 20 FPS. And that was just so I could listen on Ventrillo. Couldn’t even talk, no mic…these days, everyone and their mother can watch 4k movies on their PC while also having Discord and WoW running at the same time. It’s night and day.

That’s awesome :joy: I remember in Wrath I played on the biggest PoS dell computer you could ever imagine, and I had to turn my graphics down so low just to be able to play the game. I could barely see DK death and decay, pally consecration, mage blizzard, all those types of AoE spells, it was hysterical. And in Vanilla I played on my dad’s awful COMPAQ computer, and I could barely see in front of me because the render distance was so terrible. Ahhh good times.

Same! I honestly didn’t like playing vanilla originally because my computer was so bad, but I could play FFXI on my PS2, which didn’t have the same issues! I think it’s the only reason I even kept playing XI as long as I did, haha.

Thankfully by the time Burning Crusade came out I was finally old enough to get a job and the very first thing I bought was a brand new Alienware (lol) computer!

After watching streamers wipe for hours and hours on multiple bosses, I would say it it players knowing every single thing about the fights and them practicing for 5+ years on private servers that allowed them to clear it so fast.

Groupthink has always been a problem in vanilla. People have got it in their head that MC was hard when that just isn’t the case, long before 1.12. The hard part was the rep grind, and getting 40 people together moving in one direction and following rules.

You won’t find the exact changes thru out all the patches from 1.1 to 1.12 but there was definitely tiny changes done and people knew they happened because you could “feel” it in the game.

Plenty of things never made it to the official patch notes.

This with itemization getting better, new loot from quests and dungeons, and class buffs and talent changes. All that makes the game easier.

Honestly the biggest thing aside from just general knowledge we have now, is the 1.12 class and talent changes. If you look at the original talents and class balance they are massively different! And for the most part classes are much powerful in 1.2 than they were at launch. Well aside from rogues anyway LOL.

IMHO 40 people discipline, raid experience, and addons make the largest impact. I raided in Vanilla, and MC was never really hard compared to raids later in the game. Simple mechanics (“you are the bomb” anyone?) still would lead to a wipe because people had not 10 years of raiding experience. The addons to warn you about problems did not exist yet. Add the chaos of 40 people on voice chat.

I’m no bit surprised that MC is already cleared - except for the point that there already are so many 60s around after a week of playing.

You are the only person here trying to make yourself feel better about yourself.

The main reason people are pissed MC is so easy is because it will turn the whole classic experience into a BFA experience. Phases will be pushed out so quickly to accommodate the streamers/no-lifers that the vast majority of players (casuals who are now older and have responsibilities) will have incredible power creep. This power creep will make leveling to 60 and gearing up for MC a joke.

Guess what, we already have a pussified leveling system and meaningless progression in another game… its called BFA.

But you’re just basing that off an assumption. You don’t know how long it will take for the next phase to be released, that is a complete guess, you have no factual evidence to back that point up.

And in regards to your BFA comment, Blizzard has spent the last 15 years trying to cater to the casual audience, not the streamers/no lifers, you have it backwards there. That’s why we have LFR. That’s why we have catch up mechanics and titanforging. That’s why we have level boosts. That’s why we have the garbage that BFA is. Stop making blanket assumptions with no evidence whatsoever and play the game at your pace.

Yea what’s up with that haha I thought I was supposed to be an unstoppable killing machine? People keep just running away from me with ease haha. I know I still have a lot to learn, but I do remember them making big changes back in the day.

Hell part of the reason I wanted to play Rogue is figured world pvp be so huge and didn’t want to get ganked nonstop by undead rogues as a warlock like I used to back in the day. But being patch 1.12 probably wouldn’t even have been that bad.

That being said I actually really do like Rogue and been having a lot of fun lol.

Ya at launch rogues with very little skill could kill people with no gear lol. They are still awesome though, just not utterly broken!

Did this happen? They wiped in mc? Lol
