Model Updates for Old Mounts

So I have been playing WoW since vanilla and what not, there have been a LOT of great mounts in the game and such but comparing stuff from Vanilla through wrath to stuff from like WoD and sooner, I have felt more and more like the old mounts are less desireable because of their low res/old models. It would be cool to see them get a texture update or even a model update. Personally I’d love to see the Armored Snowy Gryphon get a new model similar to the Grand Armored Gryphon. Would also be nice to see the old racial mounts like the Human Horses and Darnassian Sabers get an update to a new model just so they stay visually appealing and not so out-dated. Anyone else think this would be nice?

I agree that there’s a ton of really nicely defined mounts out there these days! The class mounts in particular were really nice, like the paladin one for example - it left golden hoof-prints as you ran. I thought that was pretty sweet.

As far as old models go, I don’t want the old ones updated… I like that they’re low res. I think old mount textures are appealing in the same way that old vanilla armor sets & weapons are! They’re kind of retro, which is nice, but I think its the sentiment that really does it. When I’m browsing through mounts and I see - like you’ve mentioned - the Grand Gryphon model from MoP? I love that thing, it’s absolutely gorgeous! Then I see my ol’ Snowy Gryphon (my fav one!) and it brings along old memories with it - fond memories.

That said, I think a good move would be introducing a new batch of updated versions of those mounts. Not to replace the old ones, but to live alongside them! That’d be pretty sweet and get the best of both worlds.

Ohh you know what would be cool? Tie them in with heritage armor questlines! Retroactively add them to races that already have heritage armor, but include a base updated racial mount & a swift version of the updated racial mount too! That’d be amazing.

But… I’m not a dev, what do I know. x3

I’d love to see that as well. Specially the old swift horses, they are still cool but so poor in the texturing.

Well I mean the new races and stuff that we’ve gotten already have their own mounts and stuff… IDK what the horde ones are but I can imagine, but VElves have the strider mount, dwarves have the molten core hound thing and KT’s have their horses and stuff but I do think giving a new mount with the heritage armor would be cool.

As for doing a 2nd model for the mounts instead of replacing them does seem like a better idea now that I think about it. Personally, I’d be happier with either solution.

Yeah, the new ones are definitely cool, can’t deny. I’m personally a big fan of the Velf mount if only because it instills the vibe of a Lovecraftian Chocobo. xD

I get what you mean though. The models are dated, I’m just a softie for the old textures I think. ^^

Drakes, drakes, all the drakes. Even the NPCs

Was doing that one dragon quest in Drustvar, gorgeous scenery, updated model NPCs to talk to, other mobs look well done, then POOF there is this low res, googly eyed red drake with a massive under bite and buck teeth asking for my help.

It would be shocking that they didn’t role out a model update for drakes when they release a Dragon Isle patch.

Agreed! I’d like The Headless Horseman mount to get the same update they did for Midnight in Legion’s Karazhan.

Right? Like I was so excited when I saw the preview of Legion and saw Senegos, finally updates. but no.

Apparently you start out high res as a whelpling have an incredibly long awkward teen phase where you go low res for a few centuries, then become a high res elder dragon

Dragon puberty must be a painful process. Also totally agree, Senegos is beautiful.

It weirds me out that when you do that quest area, the Azure Drakes all have saddles. I guess they don’t have a model without one. Which is also odd.

Yeah, I made sure to ride around on mine there to establish my dominance, Stellagosa wont return my mails though.

I don’t think we can realistically expect model updates for each old mount. There’s just too many.

What I can see realistically happening is a new mount based closely off of the old mount.

Ex: a new and improved Invincible 2.0 for 5,000 timewarped badges.

This is what I see them doing realistically. That way you don’t have to deal with the outcry from folks that love their block mounts.

The BC —> Legion Talbuk mounts are a good example of this.

They don’t update things, they release new things in HD and make you grind for them.

HD Gryphon model from 5.1, anyone?

Personally I hate the low res mounts. They look awful and I wish we’d get them updated. They somehow managed to make the tallstriders look so much better, so I hope the other mounts that are really cool, like drakes, get updated too.

Updating low res old items is low on their priority list.

Obviously @Alluringdawn but it was a fun thought I had this morning while looking through my mounts is all ^-^

I have no objections to adding updated models as entirely new mounts, but for the love of Elune, leave my existing mounts alone. I want them to look like themselves, not like some new improved version. This game was released in 2004, and trying to make it look like it was released yesterday is a mistake.

I, for one, would LOVE new updates and models; for example, Undead and Human Horse mounts.

I would support this kind of idea only if the updated high res versions weren’t locked behind a massive grind or stuck with a hefty gold price.
