Mobile app "Login requires subscription"

I am trying to use the companion App but I keep getting the message "Login requires subscription" I purchased one month game time, it is not a monthly subscription. Is that the reason for the message? Do you need a recurring subscription to use the companion app?

I'm on an Samsung device, I dojt have the latest expansion at the moment.

Well, the latest version of the mobile app has no function unless you have the latest expansion. The word "subscription" in the error message means "active game time on the BfA expansion".

so the app is worthless to me because I didn't purchase the upgrade?

Lame enough to be in the known issues sticky ( https://us.battle.net/forums/en/wow/topic/20767587270 ):

Legion content is currently no available through the mobile app

So they'll probably fix it someday. Just not yet.
