MMOs are essentially the first iterations of a metaverse concept. Now that everyone is once again showing an interest in digital presence and massive online communities, I wonder if the iron is hot for a new resurgence of MMOs. I don’t think that WoW will be able to rekindle itself, but their are other MMOs in development that could - like the LoL MMO.
I’ll play anything if it generates enough hype
I hope in a few years after a long day of work I get to come home, pick up my pick axe, throw on my XBox Hololens VR 360 Ultra Series X goggles and literally mine ore in Azeroth like a climate denying west virginian just get enough something to craft a shield.
It is an interesting thought…
But I have a feeling we are a number of years away from the metaverse having widespread usage/popularity
Also, current VR setups are not ergonomic enough to support the long play times associated with MMOs
The tech is still far behind and not enough people feel like buying VR systems and also strapping it to their face for hours on end. [I also believe the cost is high for mmo designs, especially to VR].
Kinda tired of hearing that buzzword ‘‘metaverse’’ to be honest and also… I think we still need to get company to find that formula that works with MMO’s before we even get something worth diving into with that future tech.
I remember reading something the playstation founder said, something like the idea of using gear to go into VR is not the future… the better aim is finding ways to merge the two ‘‘worlds’’ without having you strap onto your face, something and being an avatar.
The whole thing now at least while in it’s gold rush seems like a lot of people just wanting to get rich off of idiots.
I love the idea of a metaverse. It’s fun to think about. But aside the problems of VR fatigue…my concern is the tech that would allow for bigger group play with fewer limitations.
Even an epic BG taxes WoW into the dirt.
Yeah, it seems like augmented reality would be a better solution with systems like Google Glass…although Google Glass was really poorly recieved during the original testing
This metaverse junk might actually push me AWAY from video games and out into the real world.
I’m at odds with myself purchasing an Oculus especially for the fitness games cause not quite sure I can personally handle VR for long periods of time. The issues already addressed here are why I would be skeptical playing a VR MMO.
If VR chat is anything to go off of, the metaverse will just be mic spam and meme avatars. And if that’s the case, sign me up.
That’s the hype these people prey on. Just speculation and lots of ‘‘fun to think about’’ stuff. Nothing else. It’s all cheap VR graphics and people selling pixellated items that we’d used to do back in the early 2000’s I believe.
The tech just isn’t there yet to support proper visuals and having you play said thing for more than 10, 30 mins, let a lone hours. Not to mention the numerous sicknesses people get from it.
It’s a far away thing that is still many years before it’s the standard.
Probably on the right track but ya I think it was just too much of a prototype. But it’s those kind of stepping stones that get used to iterate on that we eventually use en masse in some number of years. Better than strapping a mini tv to your head [exaggeration but i think you get my point]
Best viral version that almost really took off was the Pokemon Go and their clones. Not virtual reality, but definitely a blend of realities.
I remember when wearing those 3d glasses for my sega masters was… the future!
That idea was definitely neat.
Makes me wish ‘deep dive’ like SAO existed,… I’d be a Pokemon Master!
Essentially we’re just waiting for the real world release of:
Ready Player One
Metaverse is owned entirely by Meta, formerly named Facebook.
So unless users are content to own NOTHING of their own content, and in time will likely be forced to lease their own stuff from Meta, I wouldn’t count on any MMO or MMORPG being able to make sense within Metaverse easily.
I doubt it. Also the “metaverse” will likely be more like vrchat mixed with fb, where people log on, walk around in their avatar a bit, most likely in some creepy anime girl avatar, that looks too young to be in the outfit they’re in, posts their random dull aspect of what happened in their offline life, and maybe buys/sells random real life stuff on the market.
So yeah basically vrchat with a market. Expecting some revival of mmorpgs to come out of it is unlikely.
On that note, a purpose built VR experience MMORPG that’s NOT shackled by being inside the Metaverse would be a maybe novel concept.
The issue would be if said VR MMORPG was worth a user’s time and investment versus fun had and experiences played out.
From what I’ve seen and heard of all this “metaverse” stuff yeah no it probably won’t and if it did I’d just straight up quit gaming like it’s literally just an extremely worse Second Life thats full of Crypto garbage
Is it possible to mute the word “metaverse” here.
