And when I say dead, I mean more like stagnant and some types of MMOS and RTSs are dying out. An example would be fantasy and science fiction types of MMOS and RTS. Most modern RTSs are doing better when they’re based on real-life history (i.e. Age of Empires and Civilization), Total War is a weird exception as they have more success with their Warhammer spinoffs than real-life historical ones.
MMOs as a social platform are dying too. Most forms of them tend to be either high fantasy or science fiction with space travel and aliens. Those have been dropped out of favor as those fantastical elements have lost their novelty. Palia has shown that most MMOs (if you can call them that) have been growing in popularity as mostly single-player games. With occasional social gameplay, they’re more about feeling cozy and relaxed rather than fighting all the time. I admit, playing WoW for 14 years has taken a toll on me I cringe when I hear clanking metal (the sound I hear often when fighting with melee classes) it kinda has worn me out (just like fighting for years irl can wear out people too, i.e. Cops and Soldiers).
I believe that the direction of online gaming that isn’t Fortnite or Minecraft is more focused on relaxing and creativity than just fighting and killing. And I can see the appeal, I think after years of real-life violence and conflict going on in the world, people want to escape from that into a utopian world where they can just chill and be happy for once.
These are just my opinions of course.
