MMM hit me with those rogue tips

Pardon the noobness, but I searched high and low to try and find a rogue thread and failed miserably, all I found were retail rogue threads. I am utterly noob to rogue. As in, never leveled one in vanilla, bc…through current retail. I am currently leveling one for that reason, obviously, and having a blast. As a noob, I am going combat swords. Are there any general tips for a new rogue, am I going down the wrong path here, am I an idiot for choosing rogue, etc, etc… Also…that lvl 20 quest for the thistle tea recipe…any tips on that? LOL. I guess just level to 23-24 and then do it?

Also heard pickpocket runs can lead to good $, not as good as mage farming, but still good…is that true?

Thanks in advance. Lok’tar Ogar friends.

Yes you definitely want to get the thistle tea recipe. Good energy gain. Also pickpocketing/lockpick you want to level because of chests and of course just pickpocketing mobs. (not all mobs have stuff to pickpocket)

I played as a combat rogue in Vanilla and really enjoyed it, although for PvP it might be beneficial to be Sub. Combat is really great in PvE though.

You can distract out of stealth / incombat to help stop patrols from aggroing.

Search for the rogue classic discord, there are tons of resources in there.

Combat swords is really good for leveling. You’ll do really good DPS at 60 so it’s a good class. Not sure about the horde quest for thistle tea off the top of my head, but I assume wowhead can explain it in detail. Pickpocket runs are good, I would pick up a gathering prof and enchanting too.

Combat swords is considered best for solo leveling as you are not able to backstab things that are facing you. IcyVeins has some great tips on their leveling guide.

One thing I will say, (I played rogue vanilla through Pandaria) - not training all your skills right away can certainly help save cash towards a mount. I’m lvl 46 and have just stopped training my dagger abilities since I’m using my swords. Also have not trained half my poisons as only Instant is really needed for my leveling.

As for that lvl 20 quest. There are certain rogue abilities that will either one shot or take the mobs on each floor to half life, making them easier to kill. I suggest waiting until you can at least train distract and have vanish (either 22 or 24, can’t recall). The first floor I think you ambush them. Second floor is either rupture or eviscerate. I recommend checking Wowhead for an assist as it can be touch and poisons help a lot when leveling.

Yes.

(Sorry, I just have an abiding hatred for rouges even though I can occasionally kill one now. If they’re a baddie. Who’s afk.)

(Also, the thistle tea quest was pretty easy. Just sap the boss and loot the chest. Make sure you have at least 70 lockpicking.)

Wowhead does indeed tell you exactly the abilities to use on the Rogue tower quest.

You also get I believe a journal from the quest giver that tells you what attacks to use on whom.

Ginzo nailed it, really.

Listen to Borgrar: that discord is amaze.

I personally hate swords. I found daggers easier to obtain. I would never not play sub spec, personally as I think it fits the class the best and armor can be optional.

I had a blast one afternoon in STV wearing nothing but the tabard. Just saying its possible.

Thanks for the responses everyone, I will head on over and check those resources. Appreciate it!

Forgot: pickpocket the bald bearded priests in STV for the fadeleaf you need to grind your blind potions. Good for alch, too. Arathi might be better for Horde. Bounce between them.

Quick point of clarification: the quest line being discussed here is for poisons, with the Thistle Tea recipe as a bonus. Additionally, unfortunately as Glinda describes, you can’t simply sap Gallywix and loot his chest. You need to loot his severed head after you kill him.

The quest is difficult, solo, at level 20. I would recommend waiting until 24 or 25, unless you can get a friend to help. Preferably a rogue. I’ve helped many fellow rogues with the quest. Good luck, you’ll get it.

When I went to do it, there were actually about 1-2 other rogues on the quest as well!

Here’s some tips for you:
-Don’t walk over campfires in stealth
-Pickpocket can get resisted and take you out of stealth
-Gouge has many situational uses: bandage, waiting for eviscerate energy, running away, spell cast interrupt, stopping a runner, etc…
-Bring the basic first aid poison cleansing item with you on the tower quest, or even better bring a shaman or druid buddy
-Distract is great fun to use on people auto-running
-In dungeon runs with a shaman dropping WF totem, don’t put poison in your main hand wep. Poison overrides WF buff
-At level 38ish depending on your gear, you can go into SMGY and solo the rarespawns pretty easily and get the chest out in the graveyard area-watch for patrols!

macro pick pocket into your stealth openers.
garrote. or cheap shot. or ambush.

Dagger ambush spec is HILARIOUS.
if you get a good dagger blue while leveling or doing dungeons it is worth the gold to go ambush /back stab spec for a few levels and have a laugh.

talent get improved gouge quickly.

I suggest remorseless attacks while leveling.
works great in dungeons too if you can snipe the killing blow.

they are weapon dependant… Know what weapon you have. and know where and when and from whom you are getting your next one from. have a plan for it. either questing or dungeons to get your next weapon.

Is this your first time playing a rogue?

Lvling is going to be somewhat more difficult than other classes.

PVE one of top damage dealers.
6% hit is must after that crit% is better
If you have to choose between hit or something different than crit unless it’s a lot AP 30+ go hit. 8% is ok to have anything more it lose value quickly.

PvP BGs stick by a shaman sents you’re Horde wait for him or her to remove buffs then strike.

PvP in general
Easy targets
Priest with no buffs (usually noobs don’t buff themselves)
Druid in other than bear form.
Arcane/fire mage (look at the shields of mana shield)
Fury warriors
If you’re improved stealth and dagger latter (combat rogues)
Paladin wearing cloth or warrior gear (try to remember what strength gear looks like)

Harder targets
Arms warriors (kite them or you die in one to two hits) if warrior is by Paladin don’t bother. Most likely has two hander.

Paladin in sp dmg plate gear(depends on spec and gear). You can try to make the go oom but if it’s a prot/holy right build/gear don’t bother he/she will wreck you(unless you have 3 vs 1 even then be careful)

Ret in sp dmg again same as the prot not worth it.

Frost mage= even with dagger spec rogue. Very strong have freedom pots.

Locks can be medium to strong depending on spec hard to tell. Look at pets.

Hunter about 50 to 50 if you get drop stay on them.

Additional information
Mages that oom
50% below any class except Paladin that’s above list.

Tip
Rogues are strongest in stealth don’t try going toe to toe with the above hard spec/classes.

Sap is fun to mess with ppl

Blinding a dwarf is worthless.

Think of yourself as a supporting role in BGs.

Remember pick your battles and get engineering and always have regents.

First aid and cooking.

Hit things until they die

Two major tips

  1. Alliance players are distractable, many wont even return to previous pathing like NPCs (this may be patched in WotLK IIRC). When you get to the right level, a well placed distract while a raid runs down the MC chain brings much joy.

  2. Get poisons asap, use highest rank instant on both weapons

I’ve helped rogues do it. Others helped me do it. Main thing to remember is doing the /salute like you’re told and using the flare gun. It hurts to run to him, and have him attack.

LOL, pick up fishing and cooking. My rogue got the recipe and I didn’t have cooking at all on him. (My warlock is my main cook for all my characters.)

That one was easy, as I remember. Just make sure you pay attention and use the thing the quest giver offered that shrinks the mob to manageable size.
