MM Hunters Lone Wolf or use a Pet

Title ask my main question do we use our pet or stick without using a pet and get the lone wolf buff? Also as a MM hunter leveling up when i get access to torghast and the catch up armor from Zerith Can I solo Torghast or will i need a group?

depends on the situation.

Generally, for PvP and soloing, you want a pet. (The pet utility is a must in PvP, and pets go a long way in keeping you alive when soloing.)

For instances, M+, and raids, you can go without a pet — but be sure to have a Ferocity pet on call! For the Primal Rage (bloodlust).

And you certainly can solo Torghast on MM! Twisting Corridors, too. But having a pet is a must, though. Scalehides or gorillas highly recommended for Torghast.

Also, it’s not always a big DPS loss to use pets — in single target fights, the difference is like 2%. The pet does damage too, after all!

You will see a difference in AoE fights, though, because our pets don’t have AoE. That’s why we typically don’t use pets for instances or raids.

(I wrote this before seeing Watermist’s post. Lots of overlap but may as well)

Situational

  1. Dungeons - take out ferocity pet during/before fights where you’re going to pop lust, keep pet out and dismiss as soon as fight is over. Otherwise, no pet.
  2. PvP - I believe the move for BGs is no pet? Or at least your preference. Arenas you want a cunning pet with mortal wounds.
  3. Raid - No pet. You won’t be in charge of bloodlust unless your raid group is full of goofy goobers.
  4. Solo - Pet. Growl on and misdirect, mend pet on CD.

MM hunters rarely use tenacity pets, if at all. If you do PvE, ALWAYS have a ferocity pet available. I prefer to have atleast 1 fero, 1 cunning, and my spirit beast for when I swap to BM.

So the last time I really played hunter the type of pet mattered on dps. For ex Cats did more dps than wolves and so forth is that the case or is it just use what ever class of pet I.e Ferocity, cunning and what not.

Yes on Torghast.
It can start at a low and kind of easy setting and then you “climb” to the same content but higher and more difficult challenges.

Torghast is great in the sense that you get anima cells that buff your spells and that is the whole toolbox! Doing that you might see some spells exaggerated and you might fall in love with them, lol.

Pet spec (fero, tenacity, and cunning) is the most important.

Pet types have special abilities, such as heals, shields, slows, debuffs, etc. You can check petopia to see which pets have what. There’s no more difference between attack speed/damage, that’s all been standardized. As MM who only does group instanced PvE for example, I chose my ferocity pet off of aesthetics.

In BFA, Blizzard basically equalized all the pets, dps-wise.

All pet family abilities (like cats vs wolves vs raptors) now are all utility; it boils down to what you prefer!

The three specs, Ferocity and Tenacity and Cunning, comes with spec-only spells and passives. Ferocity have the bloodlust like I mentioned, and a passive Leech buff. That’s why Ferocity pets are considered the best tanks (ironic role reversal compared to before, I know) — the Scalehides and Gorillas have that “halves damage taken” shield ability while being Ferocity. That’s why I recommended them for Torghast.

Cunning’s abilities are fantastic for PvP; you can go with the pets that have a Mortal Wound-style ability (like raptors), or choose another family with a spell that you like. Here’s a useful tip! Get the tome which unlocks ability to tame undead pets, then tame undead Cunning pets like those skeletal raptors. Why? Undead pets are largely immune to CC! So they’re very useful in PvP.

Tenacity pets are largely considered “useless” compared to Ferocity and Cunning, although they do come with a passive that boosts your armor (or maybe it’s healing. I don’t immediately recall at the moment). It’s just outshone by Ferocity pets’ 10% Leech passive.

As for Torghast… it’s a lot easier those days, especially with the new revamped abilities — grab the ones that boost your pets’ HP and armor! Yes, on your MM Hunter. It will help your pet survive longer and keep aggro (one-on-one, but this doesn’t mean you can ditch misdirection). For kicks and giggles, I ran Twisting Corridors, layer 8, like a week after 9.2 came out. I focused on the pet buffs, and I reached floor 18 in two hours (compared to four hours when I first soloed it at the start of Shadowlands), and my wolf had a 600% buff to his HP and like 400% to his armor.

It was a breeze.

TL;DR? Pet family doesn’t matter. It’s the spec that matters. And Torghast is a cakewalk if you focus on pet survivability.

They come with a stamina buff, so when you have a tenacity pet out you will have more total health. Spirit beasts (tenacity) have an on-use heal over time, but they are BM only.

Ah, yes. I remember now! Thanks.

Byöb is right, that’s why you see BM raiders run with spirit beasts. But MM hunters don’t really get much use out of Tenacity pets — the leech passive from Ferocity pets is just too strong.

Solo, world - pet or Lone Wolf is fine. I like the pet for the Leech sustain and Fetch, but Lone Wolf is nice for 10.0 WQs as you can oneshot lots of things with Aimed Shot.

Solo, Torghast - pet or Lone Wolf is fine, depending on power selection. Lone Wolf struggles to survive on higher layers unless you get a few key CC powers, or the one that improves Lone Wolf scaling. Pet is effective but clears slower.

Dungeons - Lone Wolf. Bring a pet if and only if you are the only Bloodlust capable class, and even then, only for the bosses where you want Bloodlust.

Raids - Lone Wolf, always. If you are in a tiny raid group and you are the only Bloodlust, then bring a pet, but that should almost never be the case, as there are 8 other specs better suited to bringing Bloodlust than MM.

PvP - Pet, always. Preferably Cunning with Mortal Wounds, and specced for Roar of Sacrifice - I prefer Hyena for this (there was a really nice new Hyena model introduced in 8.3 Uldum), but there are some other options.

I typically run with Wolf, Hyena, Feathermane, Turtle, and a Clefthoof for if I swap to BM for some reason (extremely unlikely, but I like to be prepared). Wolf is my go to most of the time for Lust, Leech, and a free snare. Hyena is if I get dragged into PvP or if I want the runspeed and Master’s Call for some reason. Feathermane is if I need a slow fall and I’m out of Goblin Gliders. Turtle is if I’m fighting something that hits VERY hard and the Wolf simply can’t handle it, which is rare.
