Is it viable to play Mistweaver without doing fistweaving? Im not a fan of having to be in melee so much; However seems like the best builds and most I find are tied to fistweaving
While it’s not optimal to do since there is downtime where dpsing is useful, it’s definitely possible to meet all the healing checks as a pure casting MW.
Yes there are other viable builds for the major end game achievements/progression paths. (m+20’s and pushing, mythic raiding )
That said if you want the best dps/hps and to push like 28’s+ and to try to be the best MW out there Id suggest going with the meta stuff.
If you dont care about any of that, ( I have a feeling you don’t ? ) , and are looking to just chill and be a healer this is what I use in m+:

Suggest still being in melee and always be regenning mana through TP/BoK to dump later, I swap Calming Coalescence around with Mists of Life depending on if the tank will get destroyed or if it’s a fort week. ( basically use the whole toolkit - being in melee is optimal for MW regardless of build, though sans fey line means you can dip in and out no issues if needed ) Bread and butter is still the same ( ren mist spreading/set ups, etc ) so the basics can still be read off any guide, or just if you put the talents/abilities together.
It got me through the season’s m+ up to 20s and then I stopped caring about m+ ( outside of getting 421s on the vault ) . It was 30% haste and mastery->Vers heavy. Very against the meta but it worked for s1 up to 20s, doubt Ill change much in s2. Again if your goal is to push higher content - like content only 2% players probably do - then Id go with what is in the meta stuff and just practice lots. My build isnt tested or intended to push world first stuff. This build does less damage, but for 20’s ( max intended # for vault upgrades for weekly ) this isnt an issue.
There is also a secret infusion/invokers delight build going around. ( celestial/haste heavy )
This is what I run in raids: Mistweaver Monk Dragonflight Talent Calculator - World of Warcraft (wowhead.com)
Again, not meta but gets the job done. I swap to the m+ build on brood and dathea. ( smaller groups, just seemed to work better on those fights )
My advice if you arent going for high end bragging rights stuff: play with your talents, combine them, use what works best for you for [ insert whatever boss fights/content/encounter ]. do your best and look for ways to improve. ( IE keeping ren mists up and spreading them, practicing fights and knowing damage windows, etc )
Here is the secret infusion/invoker’s build someone posted on here a bit back. This person does 24’s I believe with this build. Bread and butter is very similar to how my build plays too.

Awesome, thanks for the replies all.
Yes you can do a caster build, it is viable in keys into the high teens and early 20s. Don’t know about raids but I’m sure it’s fine there. However, you still want to play in or close to melee range for your combat abilities and interrupt. Even without fistweaving you still want to be using rising sun kick.
Ps. Don’t let the die hard fistweaving players tell you you can’t be viable playing a caster build. You absolutely can. Imo it’s a crap ton more fun too.
Im psure that if you run a proper caster build in any key level, you can easily complete it.its just it doesnt have any representation in the highest of keys . MW population is small, very small actually,so its kinda normal to not see anything different
Just keep in mind that even as a caster, there are still things you will want to be in melee for, like leg sweep/interrupt/mystic touch.
The optimal build for MW requires you to fistweave - but caster Mw can still play well and do decently high keys. Still things still required you to get in melee for but casting is just fine thought not the best.
