Mistweaver Monks DPS rotation for questing

I just recently got back into world of warcraft. Since Dragonflight is coming out soon I have been looking into what changes are coming. Monks look like they would be really fun, so I decided to start playing my old monk. I decided to heal this time and turns out questing to level is really not so good. Paladin was my main for Legion and BFA, their rotation has more abilities and cooldowns that can do damage. Monks only have the 3 main skills for their rotation. Expel harm is so low dps that I wouldn’t count it. Crackling jade lightning is a channel ability that doesn’t add to the rotation.

A few suggestions.

  1. Crackling Jade Lightning could be turned into the old chi explosion for windwalker monks. It would hit the primary target for damage then half as much damage as a dot and heal 5 people in your party. So it still feels like a healer ability.

  2. Make Teachings of the Monastery none stacking. This one I have heard a few times and also agree. Spam hitting tiger palm is not that fun. Just feels clunky to me, most rotations have me cast an ability 1 to 2 times. 3 is just to many times.

I really like the theme of Crackling Jade Lightning but I find myself never using it for anyone of the monk specs. It would be used so much more if it was turned into a skill like judgement for paladins. I don’t want the monk to turn into a paladin just using examples. If I think of anyone other ideas I will add them, just a quick thought while playing today. Let me know what you are thinking of for ideas to make it more fun to stay as a mistweaving monk for questing.

If you want a DPS rotation for questing you go Wind Walker.

Stop stacking ToTM to 3. Its pointless unless you’re trying to get mana back from Spirit Of the Crane
You’re trading probability to reset RSK for tiger palm damage
tp bok tp bok = tp tp tp bok in terms of rsk reset chance… but you get half of it earlier

I know I could switch to windwalking, but I was looking to heal on my monk and stay in mistweaver. All the other classes and specs for the most part have 4 abilities or more to do damage, including healers. I feel Crackling Jade Lightning needs to have more of an incentive to use during a fight. So I started this thread to see if anyone agrees with me or not and to come up with some suggestions on the topic. Just asking, besides switching to windwalker do you have any suggestions, or ideas, or is everything ship shape?

I usually don’t go to three stacks, it was just a thought.

3xTP>BoK technically does more Dmg when questing. The OP is looking into more dmg they do not care about fishing for resets which really only matter when healing.

I never use CJL in solo content. It has some uses in PvP (knocking people back/off edges) and raids/M+ (applying Mystic Touch to mobs that are far from you that you won’t be attacking soon), but from a questing perspective, you’re really just looking at the 4 main melee damage abilities we have.

Isn’t RSK one of the highest damage abilities MW’s have?
Why wouldn’t a player want to fish for resets for their most damaging attack?

Their is no difference in the chance to reset between 1 stack of teachings or 3 stacks. The reason you rsk at 1 was the healing.

If you want to do more dps the 3xteachings stack does more do to the triple bok hit

This is a little miss leading. If you do tp bok tp bok vs tp tp tp bok then there is no difference in reset chance but it changes when your resets are possible which could lead to overall MORE rsks per minute. Not to mention the only thing you gain from doing tp tp tp bok vs tp bok tp bok is 1 tp hit… which is a depressingly low amount of damage

You get 2 extra bok.

So lets compare worse case situations (no reset) using the same number of GCDs here

  1. rsk → tp → bok → tp → bok
    vs
  2. rsk → tp → tp → tp → Bok

Rotation 1 gives us 1 rising sun kick, 2 tiger palm, 4 blackout kick
Rotation 2 gives us 1 rising sun kick, 3 tiger palm, 4 blackout kick

if we cancel everything that is equal out you end up with 1 bonus tiger palm on rotation 2

Ok, so I thought about it for a while, and if I did my math right, there are about 7% more RSK resets per tp bok tp bok compared to tp tp tp bok, which would average out to about half the damage a tiger palm for each rotation. Since this is less than 1 Tiger Palm, it actually does look like tp tp tp bok is the better rotation for solo dps.

So, it turns out this statement is correct:

I think you did do the math correctly but also half a tiger palm difference in damage is insanely low IMO and basically turns into a it doesn't matter what you do as both are roughly the same damage so pick what is more fun
