I have 2 or 3 alts who look after things like auctioning, guild banks storage and so on. Generally if they receive mail, the mail icon shows up next to them on the character screen. However one (situated on Area 52) never does.
even though it’s one big list, from my experience, the icon shows up only for the characters on the realm you’ve selected
