I have to admit, tying the Forsaken more to the Necrolords would really be the perfect thing.
It would allow the Forsaken to evolve into something other than… cheap, knock off Scourge devoted to an absolutely doomed goal - plague*blight everything everywhere. The fact that they got away with that for as long as they did is a glaring oversight.
Not only that, but it would allow them to evolve while maintaining their original aesthetic and identity. People hate Calia, and of course they will, but hate her or not, she represents a 180° from the original Forsaken incarnation. However, she represents a way for the Forsaken to be more than just pawns of Sylvanas with no identity or hope beyond that, chasing a doomed goal that was never, ever going to happen.
But… so too would Maldraxxus.
And it would make sense. If I were the Primus, or really any loyal Maldraxxi, the fact that the Jailer ripped off and completely perverted everything I stood for would be existentially infuriating. Having Maldraxxus step in, say, “yeah, you help us clean up the Scourge on your world, and we’ll help you with that whole… survival/existing and undead thing.”
Maldraxxus could likely fix the broken necromancy that makes being Forsaken so unyieldingly miserable, and even provide ways of replenishing the Forsaken’s numbers without the Val’kyr. It would be a perfect partnership. The Forsaken would maintain their original aesthetic and much of their original themes. It would give the Forsaken, not just a purpose that aligns with their original goals, but one they could earnestly pursue and no one would want to scour them from Azeroth for. And it would give them a goal that… could see legitimate progress, and there’d be a sense of hope for.
Wiping all life from Azeroth in a laser green fart cloud isn’t going to happen. It’s just not. Don’t waste anyone’s time thinking otherwise. But defending azeroth from the Scourge, and doing so successfully? Perhaps in the process actually finding actual acceptance with the broader world? That is something that could actually happen, and would be something worth fighting for.
And all the while, the Forsaken would still be… Forsaken. They wouldn’t need to get “Lightforged” or anything Calia might bring to the table, they’d maintain their look and dynamic and mode of operation (minus the omnicide), and they’d be doing something that people other than the Forsaken could earnestly support.
Maldraxxus and Lordaeron - it should happen.
