Hello, i decided to level a spriest recently and im confused about a few things. First off why would i use mind spike over mind flay and why does this class have no aoe? Im like 27 and the aoe is mind sear but its only based on my madness bsr so it lasts for 1 second? Why isnt mind sear just a standar aoe channel?
There are entire threads about each of these questions. Regarding the Spike vs Flay thing, you eventually get a talent that can make Spike instant, so it’s a good proc for when you have to move. Flay for the snare (or C’thun tentacles, if you later take that talent). Both are fillers, and their utility has been debated extensively.
Don’t think too hard on it, none of it will matter in two or three weeks.
It used to be a filler channel and the aoe rotation was literally just mind sear.
last xpac they added searing nightmare and the aoe rotation was mindsear > searing nightmare on repeat.
This xpansion you use psychic link with shadow crash and pump mind sear when you get insanity, which creates a pretty exciting rotation. Its awkward because shadow crash is unreliable, our aoe is pretty clunky, and shadow is getting a rework next patch but its still really clunky due to reliance on shadow crash, you will have no aoe skills other than shadow crash and will rely on psychic link for all ‘aoe’
mind spike is also getting a rework to replace mind flay just ignore it for now.
Basically put dots on things and just do your single target rotation, that will be even more true for next patch in 3 weeks

have not had any issues leveling my priest as shadow and aoe. just dot everything and ST rotation. i get a ton of procs that do a lot of damage
