I have been seeing this term pop up more and more lately. Can someone please explain what this means? Thank you.
it means like changing your gear and gems and enchants to get the best possible dps basically.
^
Though not just DPS, itâs maximizing output.
yea it applies to tanking or healing as well. whatever you are trying to accomplish. forgot to include that.
If youâre swapping gear and talents every pull to maximize whatever youâre doing on a given boss, youâre min/maxing.
Basically having the best possible stats for your role, so not just DPS but also HPS if you are a healer, or mitigation(?) for tanks.
If youâre a min/maxer, it takes ages to gear up because of RNG, which is precisely what blizzard wants.
a good example is my holy pally friend. she plays the glimmer spec in raids only which requires certain talents and azerite traits (glimmer of light) and even different stats for when she raids.
but when she goes to do m+ she uses the âwhack a moleâ holy spec which is completely different stats, talents and azerite.
so that is kind of what min maxing is like if you are looking at the same spec.
On mythic progression where you are say only killing one boss per week it is easier to min max for a specific boss unlike on heroic because that is the only boss you are focusing on that week if you extend your raid lockout. I think we were on mekka for like 2 or 3 weeks and blockade for a week so all our demon hunters went the âautoattackâ spec for blockade which is not what they did for mekka i believe.
Reading this thread my brain just exploded all over the wall behind me.
God Im glad I stopped taking the game seriously.
Its maximizing specific things, and minimizing everything else. Down to the smallest detail.
Race changing for a 40 dps increase? Min/maxing
Spending 20k to swap out all your gems for a 62 dps increase? Min/maxing
It takes gearing up/having ideal stats to an almost fanatical extreme. Where every single little detail matters.
And there is nothing wrong with that. There is also nothing wrong with not wanting to go to such extremes. It all depends on what you are doing.
Long story short?
Optimization.
As for the long version?
- Maximize strengths.
- Minimize weaknesses.
So what happened to just putting the gear you get in the bank and when you get time you go through it at the end of the month. That not good enough these days? LOL. Good thing I do not run dungeons much.
There is nothing wrong with that, but people enjoy different aspects of the game, and for some the math behind the madness is that that aspect.
thatâs sort of what i do LOL. if i donât think itâs a definite upgarde it goes into void storage or bank and I sort through it later. Sometimes it pays off. I found BiS shoulders in my bags during uldir progression and eventually I built an emergency holy set from my leftovers.
It means trying way too hard
It would be stuff, in the current game, like when a player says they got a 10 ilevel higher item but are keeping the old item because the damage âsimsâ higher.
Another example were the horrible days of âreforgingâ, when my Hunter would go to some web site to help with it and you wanted so much of âthis and thatâ and then the âminimumâ amount of âto hit.â It was a lot bigger thing back then, the min/maxing.
I quit bothering after reforging, for the most part.
I am a simple gnome, I see higher ilevel I equip.
Yes
Itâs an old fashioned mind-set that says: âIf itâs worth doing, do it well.â
But not everyone is so driven that they extend that to all aspects of their life, and depending on their choices, thatâs just fine. I think WoW can be excused from that maxim if someone wants to just let off the gas and cruise; but there should be no issue with the player that enjoys bringing that to the table.
The social trick is: donât put your brand of enjoyment on others. This is a recreational activity - itâs all good.
Minimizing bad stats and maximizing good stats.

If you want the most in-depth description.
I understand. Itâs part of the new player base. All the micro management of every aspect of the class. Itâs not good enough for a Druid or a rogue to just loot a leather piece anymore. Itâs needs to be such and such stats too. I guess I am behind times.
LOL, I still use my mouse to select spells on my action bar. I think I a bit old school.
Itâs always existed nothing new about it. In fact, itâs most likely a ton more complicated now due to all the different traits.
