So Mike Morhaime just started a new game studio called Dreamhaven. It has 2 studios under it (Moonshot Games and Secret Door), with old Blizzard employees leading those studios as well.
Moonshot is led by Jason Chayes, Dustin Browder, and Ben Thompson.
Secret Door is led by Chris Sigaty, Alan Dabiri, and Eric Dodds.
What a year. Can’t wait to see what these studios can do.
Proof he didn’t like the direction the company he helped found was going. Plus, after reading a few articles it seemed especially WoW was beyond his ability to guide and to direct.
It would be interesting to see the genre actually take a step forward. Seems like everyone is either trying to be extremely regressive in their design choices, or are actively designing their MMOs in ways that treat the MMO space as an obstacle rather than a strength.
“Dreamhaven” is also an extremely telling choice for a name. Referring to a haven for dreams sort of implies that Blizzard itself was a place where dreams were not safe.
Yep, pretty much all failures or mediocre results. It’s almost as if a single employee cannot recreate some kind of magic formula that made Blizzard games good.
Genre has been dying forever, but it’s not the genre’s fault, it’s companies making deliberate cash grab mmos that center entirely around an in-game store, instead of quality content.
It’ll truly die when people stop liking slaying dragons with their friends in a virtual setting.
