Midnight DH Issues Mega-Thread

Howdy folks! Figured it was about time there was a thread of ‘common painpoints’ for the DH community to track and point Blizzard towards. Recommendations will be made based on Courses of Action and should not be taken as ‘all at once’.

Highly upvoted things will be added to this master list, but please keep including issues:

KNOWN BUGS

General:

  • Felblade / Voidblade is currently pathing in odd ‘overground’ motions, versus the previous ‘Heroic Leap Skimmer’ style it did. This has resulted in DH’s clipping into terrain, getting stuck, and in some cases DCing.
  • Entering Metamorphosis and using an item, or activating another ability during a movement animation (Vengeful Retreat / Fel Rush / The Hunt) breaks the character, leaving them ‘frozen’ in place. This is regularly re-creatable when hard CC’d during The Hunt before impact, or by using your Hearthstone when Meta’d. This currently impacts all DH Meta forms.
  • Aldrachi Reaver - Soulscar: Reaver’s Glaive currently interacts with Soulscar to generate a 25k-30k DOT. When additional glaive-throws are generated by Screaming Brutality, instead of extending the DoT it refreshes it to its normal value and reduces it to its base 12-15k DoT. (Possible unintended interaction with RG and Soulscar?) Seems to have been compensated for with Aldrachi tuning. The drop is not longer as noticeable.

Havoc:

  • Death Sweep is currently doing roughly 20% less damage than Blade Dance baseline (not including Demonsurge / Reaver’s Glaive procs). Appears to have been fixed.
  • Immolation Aura reignites via Undying Embers can interrupt Eye Beam before it can proc Blade Dance resets via Eternal Hunt.

Devourer:

  • Void Ray in some cases cannot be cast outside Metamorphosis. Fixed.
  • Getting Hard CC’d during Collapsing Star (Stun, Fear) locks you out of casting for 5 seconds. While potentially a ‘feature’ to prevent self-cancellation, it locks Dev out of a primary burst window and has massive negative effects in PvP. Time has been reduced to 2 seconds.
  • S1 Tier 4-Piece is currently only improving ‘Collapsing Star’, which is not being taken for Void-Scarred builds.
  • NEW BUG 12.0.7 Devourer DH now becomes completely immobile when rooted during Glimpse / Vengeful Retreat, despite being CC Immune. Cannot cast any movement based abilities (VR, Voidblade, Predator’s Wake).

Defensives

This is a common pain point for DH. Losing Netherwalk AND Dodge with Blur is currently having DH chewed alive by prominent AoE burst in BGs and M+.

Devourer in general cannot peform the ‘melee role’ of its ‘melee talents’ without immeadietely becoming a large risk factor (hard-swaps in PvP, AoE awareness, etc.). Immol Aura self-heal has fixed this for Devourer, but Havoc still suffers from lack of throughput. Current levels of Leech do not suffice.

Recommendations:

  • Blur is rolled back to reintroduce the 50% dodge chance, emphasizing previous Havoc ‘Dive-bomb’ Gameplay.
  • Darkness becomes a self-aura (similar to Paladin Aura Mastery), retaining group utility without nullifying the cooldown due to zoning (Monk Ring of Peace, Devourer requirement to kite, forced movement by mechanics).
  • Increase Leech scaling significantly (40-50% higher).

Crowd Control

DH Crowd Control, while ‘better’, is easily countered and zoned. In the WW-Sub Rogue-Caster high mobility meta, DH struggles to kite, zone, or deal with high-mobility classes (which is now just about every class but Priest).

Losing Fel Eruption (one of 3 ranged CC) and having its duration baked into Chaos/Void Nova hasn’t done much good in M+. With Nova and Disrupt on cooldown, team co-ordination is exceptionally necessary which becomes a larger issue for PuGs.

Recommendations:

  • Reduce Sigil of Misery activation time / reintroduce Quickened Sigils
  • Roll back / reintroduce Fel Eruption.
  • Turn ‘Sigil of Misery’ into some sort of targeted 'Fear’ (Howl of Terror casted at range / 2 sec cast time Fear).
  • Provide a better ‘hamstring’ for DH not tied to Throw Glaive / Remove Charges from Throw Glaive for better upkeep of slow
  • DEVOURER ONLY: Turning Shift into a Blink/Shimmer ability, where CC can be immuned in the brief window of movement.
  • DEVOURER ONLY: Extend the window of PvP Talent ‘Glimpse’.

Customizations

The nice to haves! Actual issues with customization are listed under ‘Known Critical Bugs’.

  • Void tattoos? Where? When? Why not?
  • Customizing Metamorphosis would be nice! Removing Wings / changing back adornments, horns etc.

Race Parity

It’s not a Vel post without asking for Nightborne DH. It’s time.

Recommendation:

  • Just make Nightborne Demon Hunter. Lean into the Starcaller Retreat, Felsoul Hold, and unresolved / unpunished nobility under Thalyssra.
  • The Animations are already in the race. Do what you did already and release it without customs. This is the ‘lowest effort’ to deal with current DH imbalances.
  • I will give you money.

Losing Fel Erruption feels terrible from the PvE side of things as well. Especially M+

Not having that extra stun utility and forcing us to rely on other players pressing their interrupt (which 90% of the time they don’t) just feels really bad. Not to mention you can only imprison certain mob types, so in cases where you would usually be able to stun, you have nothing if your Disrupt and Nova are on CD.

Also wanted to add on the customization side of things that it is SEVERELY disappointing we did not get void themed tattoos to go along with the eye customizations. We really aren’t asking for much. A simple recolor at the bare minimum to help embrace class fantasy. But in reality I would love to get more tattoo, horn, skin, and blindfold styles.

AND It would be really cool if we were able to customize our meta forms in the barber shop similar to Druid forms. A good portion of our time is spent in meta and it would be really nice to have a bit more options.

And last but not least

Specifically for the Devourer, I’d like to suggest changing how Shift works. Currently, the ability functions exactly like Fel Rush/Infernal Strike in terms of displacement, which means the spec retains all the crowd control weaknesses of the other two specs but offers no compensating benefits; in fact, it has less sustain.

Shift needs to function like Blink, or even better, like Shimmer. I think this would partially compensate for the lack of sustain by giving it superior mobility compared to the other two specs, allowing it to reposition itself even under the effects of crowd control.

Furthermore, if it were possible to change Glimpse so that it lasts 2 seconds and works with both VR and Shift, we would be more on par with other casters.

Losing Fel Eruption hurt, but I could live with it if we had Netherwalk. Losing that was literally pointless. We had some of the only defensives in the game that can’t be pressed while stunned. And a good defensive on a long timer that stays on the ground in one spot………for one of the most mobile classes……

Netherwalk made far more sense than Wraith Walk or Burrow. It’s such an absurd move.

Instead of ‘pruning’ actual bloat, like Slam for warriors, you target our only mobile immunity? While locks port and gate, mages invis more than rogues….It looks bad because it IS bad.

Doing things to do them isn’t meaningful change. Closing your eyes and pointing at random abilities to remove isn’t meaningful ‘pruning for button bloat’.

Please bring back Netherwalk. Id rather it be baseline or talent, but at the very least a pvp talent. And either make blur work while stunned, or add 2 seconds to VR when we hit the ground. I’d also say, make both Nova’s have a 30 yr range if that’s also our fel eruption. When I played Devourer first, i assumed Havoc had the same to make up.

These changes make it much less fun - when youre dying over ridiculous things you used to have a chance with - while seeing every caster or most melee had immunties, blocks, invis, etc.

Look at DK toolkits in pvp. Look at Enh Shamans. Look at Monks…. I know because I play them.

I don’t post often, but DH has felt horrible since Midnight, aside the DPS. Sure some dps has been there, but dps means nothing if you’re trained instantly and killed.

is it known that Blind Focus in fel scarred tree does not increase the chaos damage of first blood? It does increase the chaos strike damage, so it seems like first blood is lacking fire damage part in its script?

kinda big considering blade dance is our highest damage ability

IIRC there’s even datamined color variations that aren’t used for the Havoc/Veng Meta.

Devourer would need something more drastic, not just details of the model, but the option to choose something completely different that looks like an actual void entity, because what we have is Illidan with a cosmic coat of paint. That’s great for the Illidari trying their hands on the void knowledge they just got, but the Ren’dorei DDHs aren’t Illidari, or at least did not originate their powers like them, so it doesn’t make sense to me that their Void Meta is that.

Plenty of stuff in the Voidstorm/Devouring Host to be a reference for this.

Updated with the new ‘Permaroot’ Bug. Not sure WHERE in the CC that VR gets stuck, but it’s within ten frames of activation it looks like.

Wanted to jump back into havoc for 12.1 but no way am i doing that EssB garbage. I hated it in TWW and still do lol

Yeah man, im annoyed and blown away their pushing that. I’ll still play, but I won’t be playing EB. Unless something drastically changes on the PTR with them moving talents, etc. Or I’ll stay Devourer. I’d prefer they just doing some meaningful positive change with Havoc though.
