Microsoft SQL Server

Are there any SQL Server Admins that frequent here? pardon the off-topic > off-topic question but I have a feeling many of you who game also have real jobs to support your gaming habits

Just looking at recommendations if it’s a good choice or should I stick with Web Development. (Yes, I’m still in school)

Thanks

I’ve been working as a DBA / Data Architect for ~14 years, hmm… I feel old now, primarily with SQL Server but with Oracle and MySQL mixed in and some other stuff. I wouldn’t advise making that specific of a choice in school, when i started I was working at a company that was small enough I got to do a lot of everything from DBA work to app dev to web dev and sys admin. Try them before you make a decision.

SQL Server work is likely to be far more stable technology wise, it’s the same platform that’s been built up over 20+ years and isn’t going away anytime soon. SQL Server is also a hugely broad landscape right now with a ton of different areas to work, so there are development opportunities more admin type jobs, BI jobs which all stay relevant if you move from one to another. Web dev on the other hand seems to be on a cycle of every few years “ooo… shiny here’s the next new technology everyone has to use” which might be fun a time or two, and less so later on especially when it means you never really get more than a few years experience and are easily replaceable.
