Microsoft is buying Discord?

This is not a troll or satire. It looks like Microsoft is making a $10B offer for Discord. Will this affect online gaming significantly? Probably not much but Discord users might need to use MS account authentication. Can anyone think of anything else it might change?

Teamspeak will suddenly become popular again?

They wanna ruin Discord the way they ruined Skype. Though at this point, not sure how Discord could get much worse. Maybe more advertising?

Not like they can do too much to ruin it, discord already is crap it’s just that everyone uses it.

Unfortunately such things are common practice and aren’t even “hidden” when one reads about something going belly up that a huge company bought last year.
“BUT WAIT we have a new service that does the same thing.”

God I hope not, Discord is so nice since it has text/image and voice integration compared to our previous setup of Slack/TS

I’m really not looking forward to having to connect to my Microsoft Live account to use Discord. I really hope they don’t implement that.

But I’m sure if the screw it up royally there will be the next option to switch to and we’ll all migrate there. As much as Microsoft wants to build a google/apple like ecosystem we’re all tied into to… it’s just not going to happen. We all ditch Edge the second we install windows, shut off onedrive or whatever in favor of google drive or icloud, and does anyone even own a windows phone anymore?

I wont be using Discord if Microsoft get their greedy paws on it.

Oh wow. There’s a memory.

What about MSN chat?

I might consider raiding, or hell, simply playing the game again, if everyone would STOP using Discord for everything all the time.

I miss the days of CS 1.6 scrims and hanging out with the boys in vent.

" Microsoft cash on hand for the quarter ending December 31, 2020 was $131.968B"
This means at this point they can pretty much buy whoever they wish that will sell to them. Including Activision/Blizzard.

First they came for my Github

Now they want my Discord

It’s kinda funny that Discord was kinda created because of the mess Microsoft made of Skype. Now Microsoft wants to buy Discord and potentially do the same to it. That just means another service will need to pop up to take Discord’s place, if that happens.

Looks like we’re going to have to find a new voice server. Bill gates is one of the worst people in the world to have watching over you.

It will most likely affect online gaming as much as Microsoft’s purchase of Github affected open source development. That is not at all in the long scheme of things. A lot of people will complain and threaten to take their chat to other providers but things won’t really change.
